Its been hard for me to focus on a single subject for a while, and I can see that on these hands. :)

Use whatever labels you like on your grid: some other ideas are hot/cold, big/small, love/hate, or however else you can imagine a wide range of expressions!
The idea is to try a wide range of expressions, so try to draw them smaller with and less detail.
Artists Challenge! ~face~ your feelings Divide your page into a grid like this chart is a rectangle divided into 4 quadrants labelled "negative - postitive" and "expected - unexpected" Then fill it in with expressions that fit The same chart again, filled in with characters from 'Inside out' to represent the various points on the chart.

#beginnerartclub - Chimaera - 1 - Roll 2 or more random subjects 2 - Draw them all 3 - Combine them [below the text is a doodle for example, duck + beaver = a duck with thick legs and a beaver face] More info: - Random subjects from wherever is most convenient for you, Wikipedia, a board/card game like Monikers, a randomiser app, dictionary/encyclopedia, whatever you prefer. - re-roll as many times as it takes to get suitable subjects, this is about finding inspiration from chaos, not dealing with frustration from bad luck. - The idea is to use nouns, but a good combination of noun+verb/adjective could be fun too. I used Wikipedia, at the left of the page you can see little doodles of a moth, a Gridiron player and the NY water taxi. Beside the doodles are a few test doodles trying out different combinations of the elements: - my first idea was a water-borne moth-boat with a football helmet, I later added a crocodile face to represent the logo on Gridiron Guy's shirt (I don't know sportsball). This was basically what I ended up going with. - My second idea was imagining if a boat-moth was playing gridiron, I felt like the boat elements got totally lost, but I liked the front view of the moth head inside the gridiron helmet. - My third idea was imagining a moth that somehow had the vibes of a gridiron player and the water taxi. I gave it bulked out wings and taxi stripes and it looked okay, but it just wasn't my favorite of the 3 ideas. For the large drawing, I drew the moth-boat facing us so that I could focus on the helmeted moth head, I attempted to have the wings opened out behind, and the frame of the boat visible between them. I added some wake waves and ripples to place it in space Generating this prompt I skipped probably a couple dozen articles about random people and places that didn't inspire me to get these 3 - I rolled an extra because I do silly combo drawings often and wanted to challenge myself this time.

We got some great advice last week, if you have good tips/tutorials for stylisation please share them!
#beginnerartclub -Stylisation- 1 - Choose a reference 2 - Draw it 3 - Push and simplify 4 (+) - Repeat step 3 until it breaks! The page includes a little doodle of a 'realistic' face, then a very cartoonish version of the same face as an example of the exercise. PUSH means make big shapes bigger, small chapes smaller, curves curvier and straights straighter. SIMPLIFY means removing any elements that don't tell a story including excess shapes, lines, details, or shading. The goal of this exercise is to end up with a hyper-deformed drawing like a chibi or a newspaper cartoon character 4 pose drawings of a woman in urban clothes holding a long sword and doing a high kick. Each drawing is more stylised than the last for the purpose of art study. The first drawing is an attempt at realism, the proportions are natural and the clothes and hair show natural folds and gravity. Her jeans are cosmetically ripped in several places and she has a jacket tied around her waist. Her pose is very balanced, with her arms and knee close to her torso to maintain a centre of gravity. The Second drawing is meant to be akin to a comic book or anime drawing. The head is about double the size, the kick and sword are further outstretched and the hair is flowing backwards to give an impression of momentum. The creases and rips in the clothing are now just a few simple, larger shapes. The third drawing could be like a western TV animation. The head is smaller than intended because I didn't leave myself enough page. The legs are shorter, the hands and eyes are larger, the hair is fully blowing back, the kick angle is much longer. The details on the shirt and jeans are removed, and the jacket is spread much wider and hanging lower. Her chest is smaller, and I probably could have eliminated the indication altogether and relied solely on the shape instead. The final drawing is chibi proportions, her head is the same size as her body, her hands and boots are much larger, her kick is straighter and higher. her legs are shorter. She no longer has a visible breast shape, neck or shoulders, and her hair has been simplified down to a single thick ribbon, except for the single long strand over the ear which emerged as a prominent characteristic simply because I simplified every other part of her hair.

This week's prompt was hair. There are things that are definitely easier done digitally but I'm finding these traditional practices much more satisfying and enjoyable.

Beginner Art Club Draw a Face Pictured is an excited boy with a wide brimmed hat and a facial scar. If you squint he might resemble a familiar rubber pirate, kinda. I decided to play around with some old manga pens I have had for about 20 years and hardly touched, but I don't think I used them right 🤣
