The UK government is proposing radical and punitive changes to settlement rules. This is settlement, not citizenship. The consultation is open until 12 February; please respond to it and oppose these evil proposals. Amnesty have a good guide: www.amnesty.org.uk/resources/gu...

It feels like it's been impossible to get people outside of higher ed to understand that eliminating staff/programs/majors is primarily an ideological project, whatever claims are made about finances.

What's happened at the Post is what's been happening in higher ed for ages.

Phenomenal talk tonight from @luisacale.bsky.social at the London Paris Romanticism Seminar on her new monograph THE BOOK UNBOUND: flying leaves, heavenly voices, epitexts across a century ... what more could one want? So glad I was able to be there.

Any authors/artists feeling weird about doing self-promotion right now: I'm actually kind of begging you to bring some of your unique creation to my timeline.

Not just as a distraction, but because art is a tool for building empathy--it's the way we learn to see the world through other eyes.
"Books for sale!" is basically a timeline cleanse at this point. It feels like hitting a save point inna video game and being able to breathe for a moment.

First day back today lecturing on a BA English prog. that is 'teaching out' i.e. shutting down. It's an awful shame, for all society tbh. In spite of this, or because of it, we've written a beautiful class: The Rise of the Professional Writer, looking @ centuries of value & importance of literature.

Been thinking this morning about the value of taking the time to be calm, to read & write, esp in our current world (on fire).

I'm working on that for myself & am always open to chatting w/ writers looking to develop their practice & find meaning in their work.

Super excited to be returning to Canterbury Christ Church Uni to co-teach a module on The Rise of the Professional Author. There is nothing better than working with a colleague to build a beautiful reading list full of books and authors you love, knowing you'll soon be discussing them with students.

The first great American 250th anniversary date of the year arrives this Friday: the publication of Thomas Paine's COMMON SENSE, which occurred on January 9, 1776.

Many sources have the date as January 10, 1776. This is incorrect. But what accounts for the confusion???? Friends, follow me.

Do any Gothic people have access to a digital copy of the following text? Anon, _Phantoms of the cloister, or, The mysterious manuscript : a novel : in three volumes_, 1795. I'd be so grateful if anyone had this, and could email digital copies of the volumes to me.

Not ignoring the many horrors this morning, rather processing them by leaning into beautiful things:

working w/ a mentoring client on a fascinating research project
doing some of my own research

walking in a soggy forest

then collecting son from school to celebrate the second night of hanukkah.

I have some limited availability in January and February for new projects.

Very disappointed to share that I've pulled out of this event. I didn't feel comfortable going ahead given strike action by BL staff.

Asked about rescheduling, but was told this won't be possible.

Sad I won't get to celebrate this MS so central to my work, but this feels like the right way to go.
