⚾️ 📺 MLB World Series 2025 Ratings Preview: Are the L.A. Dodgers Enough to Hold U.S. Interest as They Face the Toronto Blue Jays?
MLB World Series 2025 Ratings Preview: Are the Los Angeles Dodgers Enough to Hold American Interest as They Face the Toronto Blue Jays?
Hollywood is the entertainment capital of the world but these days, it is also the center of the baseball universe, thanks to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Reflecting its home city, the team boasts a plethora of stars galore and perhaps none bigger than slugger and pitching phenom Shohei Ohtani. In the series-clinching Game 4 of the National League Championship Series opposite the Milwaukee Brewers, Ohtani struck out 10 hitters and became one of only 13 players in baseball history to hit three home runs in a single postseason game; he led off that game with a homer and his second home run that night left Dodger Stadium. In last year’s World Series, the Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees in five games. For this year’s Fall Classic, Los Angeles encounters another American League East team: the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto’s path to the top of the American League heap was definitively unexpected. The AL East’s last place team in 2024 was expected at the bottom of the division yet again, according to an ESPN baseball preview back in February. Their 30-1 odds to win the American League were tied with Tampa Bay for fourth-worst among the 15 available teams. Their only headline-making move of the year was retaining superstar first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., signing him to a 14-year, $500 million contract. The Blue Jays caught fire as spring became summer, dominating the division rival Yankees. They also dispatched New York in the playoffs, followed by overcoming the Seattle Mariners in a hard-fought 7-game ALCS despite losing the first two games at home.and down 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 7. This will be the third time in franchise history that Toronto will appear in a World Series. Its first two times were in 1992 and 1993, which were the final years CBS had televised Major League Baseball. Within their brief four-year span of covering the sport, the network experienced how having only one American team in the World Series was a detriment to its interest potential. The Cincinnati Reds’ four-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics in 1990 (20.8 U.S. household rating) and the epic seven-game Minnesota Twins-Atlanta Braves battle in 1991 (24.0) both topped the following two Fall Classics in 1992 (20.1) and in 1993 (17.3) despite each lasting six games; the latter one, although three of its games concluded after midnight on the East Coast, ended on a walk off home run by Toronto’s Joe Carter. The 2025 Los Angeles Dodgers have a much higher profile than Toronto’s psst World Series opponents, the 1992 Atlanta Braves and the 1993 Philadelphia Phillies. Nonetheless, another major American professional sport also featured a highly popular team in the Finals opposite a Toronto-based team and similar declines resulted. It was 2019, and the NBA’s Golden State Warriors with Steph Curry and Kevin Durant were vying for a third consecutive championship. For the prior four years, they had only faced LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers — a rivalry that was a ratings boon for basketball. But a new Eastern Conference champion was crowned in 2019: the Toronto Raptors. An average of 15.1 million viewers watched the Canadian team led by Kawhi Leonard defeat the Warriors in six games. This was down double-digit percentages from 2018 (17.65 million) and from 2017 (20.4 million), and thru 2019, ranked as the least-watched NBA Finals in the U.S. since 2009 (Lakers-Magic: 14.35 million). However, those declines were offset by those watching north of the U.S. border. Canadian viewership for the 2019 NBA Finals ranged from 3.3 million for Game 1 to 8.0 million for Game 6 — an approximate 5 million average throughout. The Blue Jays’ current playoff run has delivered similar Canadian figures of 3-6 million viewers, numbers that should continue into the World Series. But those in Canada will not count in the United States’ Nielsen ratings system. Last year‘s levels of 15.8 million with the Dodgers and the Yankees reached a seven-year high. 2025 will not match that but the Dodgers returning to the World Series along with Nielsen Media Research adopting its new Big Data tabulations that have already boosted several sporting events in recent weeks will make the number respectable at 11.2 million I inquired with professionals in the media industry to provide their ratings prognostications for the 2025 MLB World Series. Here is their analysis — you may also observe their guesses in numerical order: Jon Lewis, Sports Media Watch Follow @paulsen_smw 13.5M for a six-game series. My rationale: Big Data + Panel and expansion of out-of-home viewing will give this series a boost over past years, even with the inclusion of a Blue Jays team whose fanbase does not count toward U.S. ratings. But you have to think that the Toronto factor will keep viewership fairly solidly below last year’s Yankees-Dodgers average. Rami Lavi, WFAN (New York) sports radio digital producer Follow @rami_lavi I think we get 11 million US viewers and 7 million Canadian viewers Michael Ingeri, Contributor to WFAN (New York) Sports Radio Follow @MICHAELINGERI Avg US attendance will be 8.5 million avg. Canada will be 6.5 million avg. I just see it a bit lower for the US in the past because of the matchup. Canada will be higher because they have their only team in it. Manny Soloway, sports media researcher and blogger Follow @sportsontvguy 12 million for a 7 games series, 10M for five games. 6M in Canada. The Blue Jays will hurt US viewership (they should be a bigger draw in Canada than the Raptors) but the Dodgers will help them avoid 2020/2023 historic US lows. Steve Kaplowitz, afternoon sports talk radio host at 600 ESPN El Paso (Texas) Follow @stevekaplowitz I will say 15.3 million in US and 5.8 million in Canada. I think the Dodgers and especially Shohei Ohtani will still be a ratings bonanza, but not quite as high as last year’s series with the Yankees. Hank Ambrose, Northwest Iowa Y100.1 FM (KUYY) DJ and host of “The Morning Fix” Follow @AmbroseHank 15 million for US! And 3 million for Canada Jason Yellin, Associate Athletics Director & Strategic Communications Officer at University of Maryland Follow @JasonYellin In honor of the most notable player to star for both the Blue Jays and Dodgers – #15 Shawn Green – the U.S. average viewership will be 15.0M for the 2025 World Series. Adding in the Canadian audience, lets add 5.0M for a total of 20.0M in North America. Brandon Thurston, Wrestlenomics business reporter Follow @BrandonThurston 11.5 million. Figure Toronto being outside the U.S. takes away the benefit of one of the local markets contributing strongly to U.S. viewership, so putting it just below the viewership for years where we have streaming and Spanish language viewership included. Braylon Breeze, Sports Media Watch contributing writer Follow @Braylon_Breeze 12.4 million. Viewership certainly won’t reach that of last year, but with the Big Data era in effect, I still expect some decent numbers despite the possibility of a lopsided series. Andrew Marchand, sports media columnist for The Athletic Follow @AndrewMarchand 12.8M No Yankees and a Candian team will cause a dip that not even Big Data can stop. 11.2M for Canada Evan Boyd, OptaSTATS researcher Follow @EvanBoydSTATS I’m not sure how exciting this World Series will be after the Dodgers demolished a solid Brewers squad, but I imagine all of Canada will be watching. I’ll say 13.1 million. Scott Nolte, Northwest Iowa Y100.1 FM (KUYY) deejay-sports announcer Follow @ScottNSports 12.7 million I think it will still be high viewership with the L.A. market and now a new team in Toronto. Armand Broady, sports media researcher and broadcaster Follow @BroadyArmand 12.6 million, 5 games for L.A. Dodgers-Toronto (Fox + Fox Deportes + streaming) Series average for Canada: 7.3 million As compelling as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has been, another Dodgers title feels inevitable, keeping U.S. viewership well below last year’s 15 million mark. Jason Romano, Director of Media and podcast host with Sports Spectrum; former ESPN producer Follow @JasonRomano US viewership 13.7 million — I’ll guesss Canadian viewership is maybe 9.5 million Lou D’Ermilio, LOUD Communications and consultant at VICE TV, former Senior Vice President of Fox Sports media relations Follow @LouDCommLLC The Dodgers have immense star power, and Toronto has proved resilient. I’m looking for LA to win in six games, with an audience of 12.1 million. The potential audience will suffer somewhat with only one US market involved, but Toronto comes in with some buzz, which will help. Bob Thompson, Thompson Sports Group LLC, retired President of Fox Sports Networks and BTN co-founder Follow @rltsports U.S. Viewership across all outlets of 14.6 million. Nielsen improvements will keep U.S. numbers close to last year, even without the Yankees. Canadian viewership of 5.1 million. Phillip Swann, Editor of TV Answer Man Follow @TVAnswerMan 12 million. Despite the recent increase in MLB viewership, Toronto’s participation will dampen enthusiasm somewhat among U.S. viewers. Lee Arvoy, writer at TV Source Magazine Follow @leedfrazer 13.35 million viewers. Viewers will tune in to see what Ohtani will do every game, growing the audience every night. In Canada 4.29 million viewers. Sports TV News and Updates, 0 Follow @TVSportsUpdates I’ll say 12.5 million in the States: Nielsen methodology changes help it to be the second-most watched series post-Covid, but replacing the Yankees with a non-U.S. team still leads to a sizable year-over-year drop. As for Canada, I’ll go with a 6 million average on Sportsnet. Caleb Newman, sports media researcher Follow @SportsOnTV_Hub 16.129 million – With a six- or seven-game series, the Dodgers being perceived as supervillains, and the change in Nielsen ratings, this year’s trend of an increase in MLB viewership will continue through the Fall Classic. Viewership in Canada – 4.988 million Richard Deitsch, sports media columnist at The Athletic and host of the Sports Media podcast Follow @richarddeitsch This is a tricky evaluation given the Toronto market (and the loss of one U.S. home market). As someone with ties to both Canada and the U.S., I’m transfixed by this series but I wonder about the broad interest in the States. As always, length matters for viewership and I’m hopeful that this series will extend into a Game 6 or 7. U.S. average: 11.8 million viewers on Fox. Canada average: 8.5 million viewers on Sportsnet and TVA Sports Michael Kay, New York Yankees play-by-play announcer for YES Network and host of ESPN New York’s ‘The Michael Kay Show’ Follow @RealMichaelKay 10.29 million. Jay Posner, former sports editor of San Diego Union-Tribune Follow @JayPosnerSD Canadian team obviously doesn’t help the rating, nor does a short series. Fox is getting both. 11.2 million. To recap, here are the predictions in sorted order (you may click on their name for their respective analyses)
