The Chemical Brothers - Escape Velocity (single, 19/4/2010) 🇬🇧

I could have picked a handful of tracks from what has quietly become my favourite Chemical Brothers album; went with the one that gets the party going (and keeps and keeps it going).

#TheTenX5 Day 1

Here we go again with another one of these! Over the next 7 1/2 weeks I'll be posting my favourite 50 songs from 2010-2019. As usual, in chronological order, and limiting myself to one per main artist.

The Drums - Best Friend (28/3/2010) 🇺🇸

The standout memory of 2010 for me is living in Poble Sec, Barcelona, from September to December (recommended).

And as I've said before (as the picks in this challenge will overlap with those for #FearOfMu21C at the time), this band was responsible for one of my favourite gig experiences:
32. The Drums - Best Friend
MAR 2010,🇺🇸

Saw them with ~200 mildly interested people @ Doornroosje, Nijmegen in June, and on the other side of festival season in front of 1000 people going crazy @ Razzmatazz, Barcelona in November. Good times.

I did find it humorous as well to call Vitesse "the universe’s first attempt at The Postal Service" in a year that has the album containing the initial collaboration between Jimmy Tamborello and Ben Gibbard that directly evolved into The Postal Service.

Relatedly, please nominate Dntel!

Nice! Just a pedant’s note that the universe’s first attempt at The Postal Service is in fact on another 2001 album - track 9 on Dntel’s Life is Full of Possibilities.

(In a much more literal sense too, as it involves the members of The Postal Service 🙂)

Yes, not everything on VERSUS works equally well, but that one’s really good.

Funny, “You Could Ruin my Day” isn’t one that jumps out at me on PAUSE! “Everything is Alright” is the obvious ‘single’ for me, but I like it as a whole.

That said, there’s better in the genre in 2001 (hello Fennesz!)

Canada calling! Still scouting for noms? Why not go for DISCOSIS by Bran Van 3000? Their 2nd album, featuring their *other* hit (which features a lot of Curtis Mayfield, his final ever recording). From there the album slides from trip- and hip-hop to pop to indie rock in at least 3 languages. Fun!
January 29, 2026 at 7:17 PM
And not just after! Four Tet's brilliant PAUSE is from earlier that year (hint hint, vote vote)

5 of mine in there! Might make it six by adding Blink-182 to mine

Dntel - Life is Full of Possibilities and The Other People Place - Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe?

Though you may feel these fall under pop and/or indie anyway!

You may have seen I've been trying to push for some more electronic dance music (small e, d, and m) and I'm sure Felix 🐈‍⬛ and R. Sanchez would appreciate your vote! (Daft Punk and Royksopp probably safe)

I'm launching another one for IDM/electronica today. Assuming Fennesz is safe, maybe... (1/2)

My solution to get around Apple Music’s horrible UI for streaming was to download Daft Music, which pretty much puts a Spotify-like interface on your Apple Music.

But if it’s for playing local files there are loads of options. I used to use Vox Music. The non-cloud version I think is still free.

As for the other big electroclash hitters, I'm hopeful Miss Kittin & The Hacker's FIRST ALBUM will make it into the tournament.

Whereas I'd be OK with Fischerspooner's #1 *not* being present. I like it a lot, but criticisms that it's a couple of great tracks and a bunch of filler are fair enough.
January 28, 2026 at 10:58 PM
Now if you don't care for electroclash but like the idea of highly eclectic dance albums, why not try FIRST CONTACT by Roger Sanchez? From Le French Touch to Latin House to Diva Disco and the occasional experimental flourish, this one's a party.
January 28, 2026 at 7:25 PM
Even at the time I think not a lot of people thought Ladytron had much to do with "Electroclash", but their debut album 604 is a lovely collection of '80s electro-referencing pop. Playgirl, He Took Her To A Movie, Discotraxx - so many great songs, and HOW cool does Bulgarian sound in that context?
January 28, 2026 at 6:29 PM
It's well-known for the icy electro tracks featuring Miss Kittin, Silver Screen Shower Scene and Madame Hollywood, but it's wonderfully eclectic, moving from deep house ballad Pray For A Star to the route 1 tech-house of Control Freaq to the Kraftwerkiana of Magic Fly. Worth a little nom, surely?
January 28, 2026 at 6:08 PM
As we're nearing the deadline for nominations, I'd like to see if we can get some more electronic albums in. 2001 was the year of Electroclash and despite the stupid label there's a bunch of great albums associated with it. I especially recommend KITTENZ AND THEE GLITZ by Felix da Housecat? (1/2)

Hmm, must admit I wouldn’t know what a Glasgow city council street sweeper took home in 1987. Or what dinghies cost back then.

I guess the song is about the man’s dream anyway, whether realistic or not? 🤷‍♂️

Second-hand dinghy, £7000-ish? Should be doable
January 27, 2026 at 1:16 PM
Well, it's either that or What Can Not Be, But Is by Vitesse. Same genre too, indie synth-pop with deadpan vocals. This one has a cover of a Springsteen track, Unsatisfied Heart, itself a pretty obscure BITUSA outtake. That and the opening track below are the standouts:

Turns out The Heartfelt isn't the most obscure album on my ballot going by Spotify plays. It's The Method of Modern Love by The Russian Futurists.

Think The Magnetic Fields during their lo-fi synth-pop phase, even including TMF-like titles such as "Your Big Brown Eyes and My Big Broke Heart":
