⠀⠀the eye * watches, the stranger conceals, but me ❓ ...
⠀⠀
⠀⠀There's a man here, sitting outside an otherwise practically empty coffee shop. How strange.

( After a few moments, they shakily reach for the handle, certain that it’d lead to the same hallway. )
⠀⠀It manifests as a door beside them, the world distorting and twisting until there lay a door where it was not previously.
⠀⠀An exit, a way of saying: you've given me what I want, you may take your exit.
⠀
( After a few moments, they shakily reach for the handle, certain that it’d lead to the same hallway. )
⠀⠀It was like biting into a fresh, out-of-the-oven cake; the fear, the doubt in their mind —— practically a full-course meal, at this point.
⠀⠀Such a shame, though, that they were made of metal... they surely would've been nourishing for The Spiral.
⠀
( They whisper, with abject horror in their synthetic voice. )

⠀⠀〝 Dead? Oh, no, I don't think I would be able to lay a hand on you! Much less... tasty than the rest, let's just say. 〞
⠀⠀Another laugh, as if it were laughing at a joke that it only knew.
⠀
( Their weak bravado is failing them, too. Desperately, they check their internal contacts list… but they hesitate, not wanting to find out if that, too, would fail. )
I-Is this… Am I /dead?/
( The thought of how /unsure/ they are of their own state makes them shudder. )

⠀⠀Have you ever tried to run in a dream? The weird, weightlessness feeling —— yet at the same time, you feel just a little too slow to outrun the monster?
⠀⠀The laughter starts up again, a joyful, cackling sound. It's like nails on a chalkboard.
⠀
( At some point, they try breaking into a full /run./ Perhaps they can outpace it? Whatever ‘it’ is, anyway. They hold onto their fast-fading, determined outlook like a lifeline… )

⠀⠀Their apparent determination gets a laugh out of the Distorted one. It's so amusing, so delicious!
⠀⠀The halls are endless, they twist, turn, yet it never ends. If they tried to turn around, they'd be met with a wall. Was any of it real?
⠀
( They hope this is just... a strange, frightening nightmare, like all the other ones. But this one seems too different, and too /real./ )

⠀⠀〝 I'm afraid ... that's not how this works. 〞
⠀⠀It answers simply; and the warmth is uncomfortable, the colors on the walls clash in such a way that is displeasing on the eyes. The spirals upon the walls twist and distort, it's as though they moved.
⠀
I-I want you to let me out. /Now./

⠀⠀More of that strange, terrible laughter. 〝 I am not a "who," little flame, I am a "what" ! 〞
⠀⠀There's nothing there, nothing that could even be speaking to them. And yet ... something is speaking to them.
⠀
( They turn back around, trying in vain to find the source again. Their expression turns to that of anger, masking how they really feel. )

⠀⠀The moment they let go of the door, it clicks shut —— and if they were to turn back, the door would be gone. Was it ever there to begin with? Perhaps not. There's just a wall there now, a wall of spiraling patterns.
⠀
( Before they can decide against it, that's already what they're doing. )

⠀⠀Nothing replies, of course. It's just a door, a door with an impossible hallway. Why would they ever think that something would respond to them?
⠀⠀It's very warm inside, and there are strange paintings ( or were they mirrors? ) along the walls.
⠀
( They reach out again, trying to see if the hallway's just a painting; but no barrier blocks their hand. Then, they slowly poke their head inside. )
Hello...?

⠀
⠀⠀Oh, but is it just a trick of the eye? Can't they feel the warmth radiating from within the impossible corridor? It looks completely normal, at least, from the outside. Nothing at all implying that this strange space was even connected to it.
⠀
( They do peek around the frame of the door, just to make sure that... strange liminal space isn't /actually/ behind it. They're still in the woods, they're still hearing cicadas. That's all it is. )

⠀
⠀⠀They don't even need to turn the knob, for the second they touch the handle, the door slowly creaks open — deliberately, as if inviting them inside.
⠀⠀Within, is something truly impossible. A hallway, windowless, lit by lamplight.
⠀⠀
( Curiosity overtakes them, so they reach out and try to turn the knob. )

⠀⠀Maybe it's always been there. The door is completely ... normal, rather, as normal looking as a door in the middle of nowhere could be! It's inviting, beckoning for them to come closer. To open the door, to inspect further.

⠀⠀There's a door waiting for you; it's simple, painted yellow with a matte black handle. Was it always there? Regardless, it beckons for you to open it -- to walk * through it.
