Collecting poor-quality graftwood from an apple variety known as Musé d’Boeu in Jèrriais. This could same as the English variety Sheep’s Nose (ref. p209 Hogg, 1884; p111 Copas, 2013) or Pig’s Nose (p104 Copas, 2013).

In the cut graftwood, I found a golden-eye lichen (Teloschistes chrysophthalmus).

Sethée d’Greffage à Sanmathès

Cider tasting and grafting night on Friday (ft. apple cake and pear tart), orchard visit on Saturday, another grafting day Sunday (apples and pears).

The cider made in November at Samarès was absolutely scrumptious, perfect blend of old Jersey bittersweet varieties.

An apple tree that has ‘aerial roots’ (known as ‘broussins’ in French) is called a Burr-Knot or a Pitcher in English. It can be propagated by cuttings.

This local variety with ‘broussins’ is called ‘Rogneux’, first noted in Jersey in 1815 by Quayle (ref. Bulletin de la Société Jersiaise, 1970). 1/2
