Apparently the Rocket trio can just remote control its balloon to them as if it's the Batmobile or something...!?

I, too, love sitting with my friends and drinking orange juice out of wine glasses.

We are eight episodes into Johto and this is literally the first time Kojirou's used his Matadogas. Eight episodes!!

Speaking of food, Kojirou apparently had a lazy river type pool at his family's house and, to kill time, would sometimes see if he could use it to eat "nagashi somen."

Rice balls are a super basic food that you can even find in convenience stores, and so the nuance here is that Bulu preferring that over its fancy "steak" dinner shows just how much it doesn't like this rich life.

(or, maybe Bulu just doesn't want to eat other Pokémon)

I'm sorry but those statues Kaneyo has in her front yard are ugly AF.
January 8, 2026 at 1:29 PM
When Kasumi's trying to convince the others to go celebrity house hunting with her she tells Takeshi that "the super famous celebrity you like lives around here," yet the show never tells us who that actually is!

I have a sneaking suspicion this was meant to air before the Itomaru episode but then didn't for whatever reason.

For one, the production artwork for this episode's dated earlier than the Itomaru ones.

Also most of this episode uses Kanto BGM when we should be fully into Johto BGM by now.

Production artwork for the episode, taken from the Japanese DVD release. It looks like these documents are dated August 27th, 1999 (the episode itself ended up airing December 2nd, 1999).

Episode 124 "Bulu's Magnificent Life!?"

The show's great at depicting hilariously out-of-touch rich people, and Bulu sitting around with *that* face all day makes for some great screengrabs. I can't wait for its next appearance.

I don’t think it was updated until Sugimori redid everyone’s portraits for Generation 3.

It’s odd, since prototype Muchul *also* had black skin and yet that artwork managed to get updated no problem.

Meanwhile Kireihana’s running around with two contradictory character designs as if that’s normal.

With the women on the show I’m sure this was something drilled into their heads.

My guess is that they wanted to make sure the animators knew that it doesn’t matter that Kojirou’s a guy, you still can’t do panty shots.

There are, but they stopped after 20 episodes (five releases with four episodes apiece).

Being late to your own caper because you overslept is also really funny.

This entire episode is actually pretty hilarious!

The way Rica Matsumoto delivers the line "You planning to stay that way 'til night?" is just so, so funny.

She's so freaking talented y'all.

This episode kind of introduces one of the biggest worldbuilding dilemma in this show, where people went around for three years saying "there are only 150 known species of Pokémon" but then also being like "just kidding, Pokémon like Itomaru also existed decades ago."

The Rocket trio chose to align themselves with *Cat* Eight because of Nyarth, obviously.
January 7, 2026 at 10:32 AM
The Rocket trio's new persona, Phantom Thief Cat Eight (怪盗猫八), is a take on "Edo Family Cat Eight," a series of performers famous for being able to do realistic animal imitations. The "Eight" in Cat Eight is thought to be based on the name of a beggar who imitated the sound of eight different cats.

(By the way, the second Bayside Shakedown movie came in at number one the week the Advanced Generation Jirachi movie hit theaters back in 2003, though the Zoroark movie would manage to beat Bayside Shakedown 3 to the number one spot seven years later)

The episode title's an homage to the TV/movie series "Bayside Shakedown," a hugely popular police comedic/dramatic show from the late 1990s. I'm not familiar enough with the series to know how much of what's in this episode's taken from that show, unfortunately.

This one's one of my favorite pieces of music in the whole franchise.

(Also, modern anime doesn't really incorporate their show's theme songs into the background music anymore, and that's a huge shame)
