Deeply disturbing—he seems to think that he can change the meaning of words, make up facts, and act with impunity
Trump to declare “illicit” fentanyl “Weapon of Mass Destruction," per draft EO
A copy of the draft was obtained and reviewed by The Handbasket.

Elon,
1) wrote letters to Congress about federal workers
2) taught students about Congress and the power of the purse
3) worked on an event for International Women’s Day
4) reread Heart of Darkness about the horrors of imperialism
5) worked on taxes—I want this money to fund national parks

As a historian, I keep thinking that these will be the days people look at when they try to figure out how everything went wrong.

All the love on Valentine’s Day!

The thing non teachers don’t understand is how little of the job is teaching. I spent most of the day counseling and consoling kids—listening to and crying with them. No one tells you have these students crawl into your heart.

Yesterday I talked with a former student who now works for the State Department—this is a brilliant young person who could have made a fortune but chose to serve his country. Expertise matters. Government employees matter.

Every day people in my net gather on the trails to watch the sunset. We may have little in common, but I love that we share a piece of magic.

I was teaching government today and a student asked if we should bother to learn all this stuff if it’s just going to be thrown out now. I had no answer for him.

I punched and kicked like a woman on fire in kickboxing class this morning. How are y’all coping?
February 2, 2025 at 7:59 PM
Dang. How many years long was your January?

Things may be falling apart, but the view is spectacular

I remember when I just worked all day. Now I have to find time to look up obscure 1974 laws on Impoundment Control, the history of Greenland, and the appropriate way to fire federal employees. It’s all exhausting.

Google Maps will change the name of "Gulf of Mexico" to "Gulf of America" once it is officially updated in the U.S. Geographic Names System, Google said in an X…

Well, Google Maps is dead to me. I might have to start using an atlas!

I’ve got a case of Sunday anxiety, so I’m trying to channel the peace of sleepy kittens.

At kickboxing this morning I noticed my punches and kicks were extra hard. I wonder where this pent up fury is coming from?! Week 1.

Since I’m only shopping at Costco now, I need a bigger fridge!!

I say a lot of nerdy things, but in class yesterday I reached my peak geek when I announced, “I was listening to this podcast on early sewing machines”
January 25, 2025 at 4:24 PM
So my government curriculum has gone out the window—we now spend half of each day just saying “what the hell happened today?”
January 24, 2025 at 1:57 AM
Well, the world may be going to hell, but the government class I’m teaching sure is fun!
