I have run into that before. Some companies post jobs that they don't have near term plans to fill. Sometimes it was because the job was posted, then budgets shifted, and they left the post up because budgets could shift again. HR typically has a slow pipeline, so they keep applications in reserve.

A new Charli XCX album, Wuthering Heights, drops tomorrow. Normally I'd be mildly interested, but then I saw that the opening cut is a collab with John Cale, a past member of the avant-garde band, The Velvet Underground, with Lou Reed. Now I'm very interested.

My teacher was perceptive and gave me bonus work to keep me engaged. He also vouched for me to get into some honors classes a la carte the next year. At my school it was normally all-or-none to get into honors classes, and honors classes had 5 points automatically added to the GPA.

I wasn't able to make it into an honors program because I didn't do well in subjects that I wasn't interested in, even though being top of the class in subjects I was interested in. I had a teacher in a favorite subject ask me "why are you in my class?" since I aced all his tests effortlessly.
