A giant loss: Robert Duvall is gone. An extraordinary artist who was fluent in every dialect of film acting, from ice-cold underplayer (The Godfather) to expert naturalist (Tender Mercies, The Apostle) to balls-to-the-wall maniac (Apocalypse Now). One of our all-timers. Plunge into that filmography.
Robert Duvall, the legendary actor whose career has spanned over six decades, has died at 95, his wife announced

Pacino is the last Corleone brother left. Appropriate I suppose.

Don’t feed the bears. The Giving Tree by way of cutesy Pixar era forest animals.

Oscar nominated short. Netflix. 18 minutes.

Guys serve their time on bar stools like they’re behind prison bars, until there’s the occasion to sing. It’s a “guy walked into a bar joke” with soulful detours that still lands the punchline.

A ★★★ review of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)
What a dumb movie.  Vividly remember seeing in theaters and immediately loving.  Ace Ventura- the toast of 4th grade boys.  Haven’t revisited since the ‘90s but man… Jim Carey sprung this into a Tom C...

Over the weekend we were trying to explain to our kindergartner why a neighbor was passing out ICE whistle kits. What better way to illustrate America’s Immigration Story than Fievel?

There are no cats in America and the streets are paved with cheese.

Very early Hitchcock. Not mired in murder, crime, or espionage but there is a “wrongfully accused” incident that drives the titular descent that ends in filthy streets and madness.

Oscar nominated short. Weird, wild, on YouTube (The New Yorker Channel).

Dystopian future, mostly in a department store, where kissing is illegal, not talked about, and punishable by death.

I had no clue what was going on most of the time but what the hell, it’s a short.

Will continue to grow in esteem within Spielberg’s filmography. New life to a dated classic.
A ★★★★½ review of West Side Story (2021)
Watched them back to back over a few days.  Spielberg’s has the benefit of taking the two great components of the original- the songs and the choreography (new but very much in the same spirit as ‘61)...

Probably underrating. Whatever else it is, it’s incredibly rich, immersive filmmaking.
A ★★★★ review of The Secret Agent (2025)
The period work is immersive.  You slide right into the time and place.  It’s hard to pin down where the story is going, why, and how the pieces might fit before realizing they never did. Part of the ...

Oscar nominated short, free on Kanopy. 12 minutes. A long sketch about periods. More of these should be comedies.
A ★★★ review of Jane Austen's Period Drama (2024)
Oscar nominated short.  More of these should be comedies.  It’s a decent sketch length.   Anyway, this one is about periods, and talking about them, and men not knowing what a cervix is.  Quite funny!

Hadn’t gone back to this since seeing (and loving) Soielberg’s version.

At some point, the iconography kicks in, the right notes at the right moment, and sweeps you away.
A ★★★★½ review of West Side Story (1961)
First time I’ve watched this since Spielberg’s take.  Going back, the original feels a little stuffier, less dynamic, more intent on preserving the stage experience.  Both versions have such a wide ra...

Seahawks winning it all with Sam Darnold is further proof the Bengals *could* have won a Super Bowl with Andy Dalton… 2015 was the year to make a run. (Or maybe 2013 if Geno Atkins doesn’t tear ACL)

Can’t really diss a team that wins their conference, but it’s sure been cathartic watching Kansas City and New England get the crap kicked out of them back to back years.

The AFC was awful this year. Would have been fun to have a healthy all-pro level QB.
