Hello I’m Oliver (he/him)
I’m an asexual non binary trans man.

Disabled, including neurodivergent, including severely mentally ill.

Full time wheelchair user due to Tourette’s.
Full time AAC user due to Tourette’s, autism and schizophrenia.
When your access needs are different to others who are using the same aids it gets complicated.

I am an AAC user. I use a manual active user wheelchair. I need a device with eye gaze as an option.

Most eye gaze users have their device mounted to their power chairs. This isn’t an option for me.

Last year I graduated with a BA hons in history from the Open University.
I went to the graduation ceremony, and I’m glad that I did go as was debating whether to or not.

A decade long, where 6 years were studying. Other years were spent sectioned and battling the council for care hours.

For me being autistic I don’t get or understand things like jokes or sarcasm
I often believe things which aren’t true or AI etc. people often take the piss because of this.

For me being schizophrenic means I don’t trust things at all and everything is bad and lies.

It’s a weird combination

The world is scary and can’t trust anything said because of AI and trolls etc.

Add on top of that being schizophrenic and I just trust no one and nothing. Not even my own brain can be trusted.

The voices lie and tamper with evidence.

Watching Hannah Gadsby’s Nanette again.

Love their stand ups.

I’ve started with a new exercise routine.

Gym, swimming, and wheelchair rugby league.

Plus all the self propelling I do to get about to the shops and groups etc.

My fitness is massively improving. Routes that I previously needed pushing up hills & rests I know do myself in one go.

I miss playing my French horn.

Feeling in a slump with being disabled. It’s just getting to me. My Facebook feed seems to be full of French horn groups or posts.

And I miss being able to play.

And it’s not just the Tourette’s that stops me playing it’s also the trauma and my complex PTSD.

Missing out on life stuff because of disability really does suck.

I’d like to talk about anxiety.

Over the years I have been diagnosed with social anxiety, generalised anxiety, and panic disorder.

I’ve always been a very anxious person. From as young as I can remember.

Generalised anxiety swarmed me and the social anxiety was hell.

Some thoughts:

Whilst Tourette’s syndrome disables me a great deal in all areas of my life.
It has also brought some good things into my life.

One of my closest friends I met through Tourette’s action and we realised that at the time we lived about a ten minute walk away!

About alogia.

alogia is:

“poverty or lack of speech, characterized by brief, empty replies, long pauses, or few words…individuals struggle to find words, provide little content, or speak less than usual, making conversation difficult.”

It is a negative schizophrenia symptom

Conversation via someone else about my broken wheelchair brake, to wheelchair services (WCS)

“What should Oliver do whilst waiting for a new brake?”

WCS: “try not to use the wheelchair”

“He can’t walk…”

WCS: “oh…”

AAC users what are your thoughts of the Smartbox grid Pad 13?

other suggestions of devices that can be used with a combination of eye gaze and touch.

cannot mount on my wheelchair. Will be seeing Ace Centre but getting information whilst I wait

Am doing long prose writing. And this sentence jumped out after a tram journey

“Am I just here to be a toy for the world to gawp at and pull the strings. I see those watching me, laughing, taking the piss with their mates, the names they call me. The phones which film me and the gawping faces.”

For me as a severely mentally ill person I don’t aspire to recover in the sense that I have zero symptoms etc.

Instead learning to live as a SMI person and trying my best to manage my symptoms is far more obtainable for me.

I don’t want to waste more years on trying to be symptom free.

Anyone know of any UK charities or organisations etc that can offer support for adults who were bullied growing up and have trauma from it?
