Isn't Anything in some ways sets the stage for the band's later work, but in a lot of ways it's also very different to what came after. It's got less of the dense wall of sound textures that came later, but still explores some very odd tones and effects. It has the same alien, unusual approach to songcraft that came later but it's done in a more raw, organic, and unpolished way compared with their later stuff. MBV is kind of a continuation of the sound they developed on Loveless. It's got some very interesting experiments on it, mixing shoegaze with drum and bass and often exploring more linear songwriting structures than Loveless. That's Loveless, the best album any Irish act has ever put out. It's a very dreamy, psychedelic, and foreign sounding record. At times it's very harsh and noisy...but there's always this soft, whispery, and even sugary pop undercurrent to the music. I like records that present contrasts like that. Aggressive, unrelenting noise underneath a dreamy pop/rock song.
