found a new favorite on my most recent trip to the MIA
large landscape painting of a snowy river scene, with a white sky, dark pines, white frost-covered shrubs, and a river half covered by ice. the mountains in the background are warm, lit by sunlight that has not reached the scene of the painting. Ludwig Skramstad Norwegian, 1855-1912 A Norwegian River in Winter, c. 1880 Oil on canvas The Sheila C. Morgan Endowment for Art Acquisition 2024.77.1 A gifted artist who left home at the age of 15 to pursue training in Christiana (now Oslo) and Düsseldorf, Skramstad had his first exhibition of landscape paintings in 1875. By 1880, he had developed a reputation as a painter of motifs from the landscapes of eastern Norway: spruce forests, pine bogs, fjords, waterfalls, and winter scenes. He was commissioned to paint several murals, giving him the opportunity to further refine his talent for painting on a large scale. The blurred strokes and thinly painted surfaces of this wintery scene epitomize Skramstad's style and reflect his attention to the rapidly advancing technology of photography.
