GOOD NEWS - Indicator of blue shark abundance in SW UK show consistent rise
Further fascinating insights from Simon Thomas & Doug Herdson on fish populations, particularly around the recent rise of apex predators such as #sharks & bluefin #tuna 🦈 🐟

Such a tragedy - Eel "management plans". @icesmarine.bsky.social again highlight that member states plans are failing to make a substantive difference & reporting data are also missing. Mortality, usually non-fishing, is far too high doi.org/10.17895/ice...

My week at #BBNJ highlighted to me that the voice of fisheries is still largely absent & needs to be heard at prep com 2 in August. Watch this space @fao.org @unbiodiversity.bsky.social
They canceled the National Nature Assessment. We kept going. The science didn’t stop. Neither did our hope, or our resolve. The work is still happening—independent, evolving, and grounded in purpose. Because weareunitedbynature.org

Gap analysis of social science resources for conservation practice
Conservation is an inherently social process—people collectively endeavor to enact conservation. Yet, in conservation social science, research methodologies, training, and competency are less common ...

Great day in Brussels meeting Commissioner Kadis and his cabinet to talk about ecosystem-based fisheries management

It was a privilege to give a keynote presentation on ecosystem approach to fisheries management @fao.org @icesmarine.bsky.social symposium. View it here eafm-symposium.nafo.int/Portals/3/Do...

It was great to see this timeline of @icesmarine.bsky.social moving on ecosystem approach. I’m pleased that it made such progress during the last 6 years. I enjoyed the journey 😉
I was honored to give a key note at the recent Symposium on Applying the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management in the ABNJ at the FAO in Rome.
You can access all the presentations here: eafm-symposium.nafo.int/Information/...

The European seas don’t recognise our human borders. I learnt a lot about current pressures on EU fisheries policies in Brussels yesterday.

It was great to present a keynote on ecosystem approach at @fao.org www.fao.org/webcast/home...

I am so proud to have worked for an organisation like @icesmarine.bsky.social that knows that it was lacking, & now is taking affirmative steps to strengthen women, thus making itself more resilient & innovative. Huge thanks to @ellenjohannesen.bsky.social for being a champion.

Managing species distribution shifts at #ICESASC25
Distribution shifts create many challenges.
Simply documenting the changes is not enough, we must explore effective strategies for adapting to them.

Great news indeed and so long overdue- it has always been a struggle. Is it really truly open and available?

Losing Didzis is such a devastating piece of news. I enjoyed working with him on a professional and personal level. My thoughts go out to his family. www.ices.dk/news-and-eve...
