Hi new followers! I am Danny, a mycologist interested in diversity, ecology, host-parasite interactions, and conservation, #newPI of Laboratory of Fungal Ecology and Evolution at the Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and head of #TeamLaboul. Also dad to my 7yo daughter Luna. 🍄🐞🦇
Always been in love with this picture I took of a violet webcap, Cortinarius violaceus. Deep purple, but with reddish-brown spores—you can see this beautifully! One of the few fungi described by Linnaeus in 'Species Plantarum' (1753, as Agaricus).

Happy to see this paper led by David Becker about his MSc thesis on the effects of forest fragmentation on bird-fruit networks in Costa Rica published in @biotropica.bsky.social

Rainforest Fragmentation Decreases the Robustness of Plant‐Frugivore Interaction Networks
Our study in northern Costa Rica found that larger forest fragments and greater forest cover boost frugivore species richness and strengthen the modularity and robustness of plant–frugivore networks,....

Why did we use a hot dog roller for this? Did the ladybirds just enjoy it like a fairground ride? I explain here:

Already used by Native Americans to stop bleeding wounds and cuts, Hericium americanum – lion's mane or bear's head tooth – is Vermont's official state mushroom!

Hot off the presses and so so thrilled. Thanks to @inaturalist.bsky.social + computer vision we found something beautifully simple: Red and orange flowers bloom later than all the other colors in the eastern United States. Paper here: authors.elsevier.com/a/1kwzh3QW8S...

The lover and I took a much-needed break in Pisa. No papers, no grant applications, no assignments to grade, not even my laptop! ❤️

Exactly 20 years ago, my mum passed away after a short fight against the monster called cancer. She was 49. It still breaks my heart.

Super nice that alumni of the #Biology MSc program at Ghent University are always excited to share their career paths with current Master students, during the job market info evening. This is part of the #ScienceCommunication course I teach. Great fun thanks to both the alumni and the students!
