Let’s be clear, no funder can absorb a 50% increase in application over a period of two years without a significant increase in resources. It is unsustainable and will trigger significant policy changes, which will cause significant challenges. This needs everyone working together.

This amazing woman worked so hard for science and sport in Canada. She set up the Standing Committee on Science and Research, was a powerful voice for science in parliament and after being diagnosed with two cancers continued to advocate for good. Proud to have known the Rt Hon Kirsty Duncan. RIP 💔

New Year’s Eve in downtown Calgary was magical, even with an exhausted little one and a hit-and-run in plain sight. Honestly, a pretty accurate summary of 2025. Here is hoping the rest of the year brings peace, health, and great papers for everyone.

🧠 Why it matters 🧠
-The results challenge a prevailing view that 5‑HT2A activation alone drives psilocybin’s therapeutic actions.
-Highlights the importance of polypharmacology 🥳, and points to the 1B receptor as a target for non‑hallucinogenic antidepressant and anxiolytic pharmacotherapies.
New paper drop! 🧠💊 Our new paper out in Molecular Psychiatry shows that the serotonin 1B receptor is important for the neural and antidepressant/anxiolytic behavioral responses to psilocybin in mice.

Here's the biggest PSE story you haven't heard yet: the Canada Student Grant for low-income students is being cut from $4200/year to $3000/year as of next August. It's implicit in the budget tables but the government is too chickenshit to actually say so directly.

The Canadian government has seemingly never read a single one of its own commissioned reports on what Canadian science needs. (It's not more people.)
Globe & Mail reports “the budget is expected to include up to $1-billion to attract high-quality talent and researchers from the United States and elsewhere”
So far hospitals and universities have been going it alone….

Children exposed to antidepressants before birth do not face lasting mental health risks
A new study suggests that antidepressant use during pregnancy does not directly cause anxiety or depression in children. The findings, published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, highlight the role of genetics and family environment instead.
