One of the most comprehensive accounts of a life that I have ever read. By the time I finished 'Ian Fleming' by Nicholas Shakespeare, it was difficult to avoid the feeling that James Bond's creator, despite great accomplishments across two careers, was rarely, if ever, happy.

'Absolute Pandemonium' by Brian Blessed is a howl of a book and often reduced me to belly laughs. His recollection of early childhood is inexplicably vivid and the complete absence of Blessed's first wife and daughter from the story is curious. Nonetheless, it's a whole lot of fun. 'Stalingrad' by Anthony Beevor: a remarkable account of one of the most brutal military exchanges in history. Few if any books have made plain the horror of war and the myopia of leadership better than this one.

'Amadeus': So many sumptuous frames, stunning costumes, the genius of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's compositions and F. Murray Abraham's amazing performance as Antonio Salieri, bolstered by Tom Hulce's manic, all-consuming take on Mozart, with sterling support by Elizabeth Berridge as Constanze Mozart.

The billionaire tech bros are lily-livered morons bowing before a thick as mince, dictator-loving US President. As for the millionaire podcaster who is happy to let a guest pedal sensationalist nonsense about cancer: talk about another highly monetised dimwit. A baffling time.
