2. March Comes in Like a Lion - Heartrending, hilarious, and something I think about all the time. Please read this (or watch the anime, that’s also quite good)

If Cross Game were still readily available in the US, I'd recommend starting there to get a taste of what makes Adachi so incredible a cartoonist, but in lieu of that, Short Game is fair at giving a taste of some of Adachi's penchant for giving things little twists, sometimes subtle.

While Adachi is most well known (and lauded) for his longer series where he gets to build characterization and drama over time, he's also done quite a few single chapter shorts. There are four collections under the title Short Program, though we only ever got 2 in the US.

And now Short Game!

This includes some short gag type filler manga that aren't interesting, but if we exclude those, I really liked these! The atmosphere was really good, this captures the fleeting moments and once in a lifetime chances at sports and life very well. I need to read more sports manga.

Picked this up at the @denpabooks.bsky.social booth at Anime NYC. It's Moto Hagio, so of course it's well drawn and well written. Most importantly she really understands cats. As a cat person myself, I really appreciated her humor and portrayal of Leo. Brilliant manga from a master of the form.

A lot of really good ones this round! Tamaki & Amane was worth rereading immediately, A Witch's Life was spectacular and I can't wait for the next volume. I was kind of lukewarm on the author's previous work but I ended up really liking Minzuno & Chayama.
