I like talking about design operations as the craft of designing how designers design — rituals, planning, communications, decision-making, exit row checks, RoB — because how we work is so important to team health and so deeply connected to outcomes
When I led product, I pretty much also managed the engineering team and we designed how we work, our rituals (asynch & synch), communication expectations and how we made decisions. We’d revisit this time to time as the team grew. But designing how you work is critical to your success as a team.

Focus on the process. In an outcome-driven world, this sounds like a crazy approach.

Obviously results matter. But if you optimize for the outcome, you win one time.

If you optimize for a process that leads to great outcomes, you can win again and again.

I love the concept of "eigenquestion". A question that, when answered, likely answers the subsequent q's as well.

As an Ops, my favorite eigenquestion: What would this look like if it were easy?

Any amazing product managers out there looking for their next role? My team at Zapier's going to be hiring for ~7 of them in the new year and would love some recs! #productmanagement

Product planning can be painful. BUT done well, it empowers and aligns people around key investments the company needs to make on a given horizon.

This year, I got to reduce the pain at Zapier.

Honestly never really loved the term ‘Dogfooding’, imagery just feels too vulgar and explicitly non-human. I largely prefer the joyful connotations of ‘drinking your own champagne’ 🥂

designers when they see a group that could have been a frame: 😮‍💨

ops when they see a manual update that could have been an automated slack message from a webhook: 🫥
