Mal takes a long time to trust anyone. Life's proven to him that smiles often hide knives. But once he does feel safe, he trusts pretty hard.

While Xun knew his foster parents were just... that and he had some ill feelings towards them, he actually liked his f/m Lythrana and felt sadness when killing her. He didn't let his feelings consume him though, he rarely cries. He still carries the music box around+
