Forest Rangers, staff from DEC's Division of Lands and Forests, NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and Albany Pine Bush conducted a prescribed burn of over four acres at the Albany Pine Bush on Oct. 28, and over 34 acres at Moreau Lake State Park on Oct. 29.

On Oct. 17, 13 Forest Rangers passed their reaccreditation with the Mountain Rescue Association (MRA) for technical rope rescue certification using technical skills learned on difficult high- and low-angle rope rescues.

A statewide burn ban is in effect due to increased fire risk and continued dry conditions. The ban is in effect through October 15th and will be reevaluated prior to expiration. You can help prevent fires in communities and in the backcountry by complying with the prohibition on most outdoor fires.

It’s officially autumn and leaves are beginning to fall off the trees. While fallen leaves can be a hassle, there are plenty sustainable ways to handle them, such as composting, making scarecrows, or even just letting them be.

Members of the DEC proudly ran the Tunnels to Towers 5K Sunday September 28. The DEC runners were supporting Team Hootch organized to honor the life of Lt. Michael Hoosock, OCSO who was killed in the line of duty April 14, 2024.

A drought warning was issued today in 12 counties in the Adirondack and Southern Tier regions and a drought watch was expanded to include 6 counties in the Susquehanna region.

A drought watch or warning is now in effect for the entire state except for New York City and Westchester County.

Recently, Environmental Conservation Police Officers (ECOs) joined staff from DEC's I FISH NY program and New York State Parks in assisting 20 adults with special needs from Life’s WORC Services and Programs for a 2-hour fishing clinic at Captree State Park in Suffolk County (Long Island).

Levanway, ECO Bieber and ECO Ableson attended the World Trade Center memorial service today in New York City. Major Daly and Lt. Levanway were both 9/11 responders. #NeverForget

Today, Sept. 10, the drought watch originally announced on Aug. 29 has been expanded by 30 NYS counties, bringing the total to 50 counties. Residents in affected counties are encouraged to conserve water whenever possible.
