Hello Bluesky! 👋

I design, build, and evaluate interactive tools to support creative people and work, with a focus on writing — something I love doing myself, e.g. on my blog: dbuschek.medium.com

More broadly, I'm excited about both "AI for better UIs" and "better UIs for AI".

Have we lost peer appreciation? Not just at #CHI2026 I notice many review-to-reject. All studies have tradeoffs, all papers have limited scope. Sure, reviewing is fast, even with "passing knowledge", if we list what isn't there and conclude it's lacking. But we should review what *has* been done.

Three weeks ago, my feed filled with Grammarly ads - and I wondered: What if we took their messages seriously? My anecdotal "ad-vestigation" connects them to Human-AI interaction concepts, leading to counterfactual questions for alternative design directions. medium.com/p/1bab97d0fa98

While reviewing for #CHI2026, I've noticed four new writing issues in #HCI papers, likely due to an increased use of #LLMs / #AI. I describe them here - and how to fix them: dbuschek.medium.com/when-llms-wr...

Well, guess what happened? Despite appreciating the changes, it is difficult to envision what the revised paper would look like, so a fresh round of reviewing is required. 👉 I think we should get rid of rebuttals without resubmissions. #UIST2025
For #CHI we can submit a revised version after initial reviews. In contrast, it now feels bad to write a #UIST rebuttal without being able to directly show changes. I wonder if reviewers will feel the same way and if that reduces the chances of seriously engaging with rebuttals. 🤔

Do you find yourself coding similar stuff again & again to "just run this quick user study"? Florian has invested a lot of time and effort into engineering reusable components for (online) studies in #HCI. We've used & tested it across several recent projects. Now you can, too!👇 #EICS2025

Help me improve my lecture: What's one idea/concept/paper/system I should include in a session on interaction/UIs for human-AI co-creation? (Feel free to self-promote your own work!) 🤩 #HCI #AI #IUI

🔍I'm looking for recommendations on recommendation systems work from an HCI perspective! (for a lecture) E.g. on aspects related to the UI/interaction design of recommendations, user control, explanations, ... Thank you for any pointers! 😄

📱How might mobile text UIs better integrate LLMs? We designed “spread-to-generate”: Spreading fingers on a draft, bubbles show expected length, then get filled with generated words. This achieves continuous control UX despite LLM token streaming latency. #CHI2025 👇

Mobile email UIs added AI replies "on top". These popups hide draft & email, so users need to remember all info from the email while prompting & checking AI results. We've redesigned this with local responses, resulting in flexible workflows - both with & without AI. 👇🧵#CHI2025

We’ve redesigned #mobile #email replies - with & without #AI. Tap sentences while reading to enter local responses (or get suggestions). Then connect them on a usual draft screen (or let AI do just that). Result: Flexible workflows with varying speed and control. #CHI2025 #preprint in comments.
