Realized the current thing I'm working on is pretty much the same vibes of this but in sort of an opposite way (temperature wise) I guess I default to octavia angst when I'm just feeling all the hopeless crushing weight of everything too much.

dug up my old best of 2023 list from cohost and felt like re-sharing the goodbye volcano high spotlight I wrote when I picked it for my GOTY. very special to me
This is the one. Every few years I'll play something that pushes the perceived limitations of what feelings games can convey as art. Even if I had a lot of fun this year playing stuff like Diablo IV and Spider-Man 2, those are not works that have any lasting impact on my being, they're ultimately entertaining things that filled spare time well enough. OMORI was the last one to have a measurable impression on myself and my life. I would be willing to bet that there are dozens of games in the independent/alt sphere that could similarly affect me, though unfortunately I don't branch out very often to find them. Looking back, I may have passively insulted Goodbye Volcano High by only deciding to pick it up out of pity about the poisonous atmosphere surrounding the game. It was a "not sure if it'll be very good but I'll buy it to support the devs" purchase because the malicious behavior of its detractors had been a sore spot in my view for several years now. Goodbye Volcano High is not a game that deserves your pity. You should not buy and/or play it just as a token gesture of encouragement towards its development team. You should play it because it's a game made with love. Real love in the face of despair, real love despite all attempts from small-hearted people. I can at least get the hesitation from many. This is a vision of archetypal coming-of-age drama through the lens of eccentric web artists circa 2000s. That's surprisingly high concept for a story that plays itself mostly straight. An artwork you love does not need to be one that's perfect. GVH is not perfect. Some characters don't get as much time narrative time as they deserve, scenes can sometimes be arranged poorly, the animation scripting can occasionally go haywire with weird bugs, and yes, the art style can be a little goofy-looking. When I wrote about OMORI earlier this year, I made the point that it didn't matter if the game was a slog to get through in various parts, because they were in service of delivering a series of narrative moments that the creators were dedicated towards reaching and ultimately succeeded in telling. What flaw of GVH could be remarkable enough when, at the end, I was sobbing my eyes out for these characters and thinking about their story nonstop for the next several days? What criticism would matter towards a game that made me feel deeply affirmed in my decision to transition? There are very few games that have that effect, it's not something I expect much at all in this medium. There's so many real, raw feelings these characters have in the face of an uncertain future. Conflicts borne out of asking how we should spent the time we have now. And ultimately, joy at being here in this moment together regardless of what comes next. I loved getting to spend time with them during the mundanity of school life, or in the charming group tabletop sequences where everyone gets to be themselves a little more. I loved the wonderful band scenes where I got to feel their anxiousness and excitement. I loved being there when, after everything seemed to fall apart, they pick each other back up through their honesty with one another. I will never forget the image of them under the aurora night sky, love winning against anything in the cosmos. Goodbye Volcano High is love. It is my game of the year for 2023 without any question, and one of my favorite works of art I've ever experienced.
