Hampton Inn Maui North Shore:  Hotel historian blew conch shell and asked guests to join him at shore's edge at sunset. Ritual to toss petals towards the sea and say Mahalo Nui Loa to give gratitude for the day. Our last evening in Maui, we won't hear story the next day. (Kahului, Maui) 20260111

Lower Paia Park: Just west of centre of village, beach popular with local youth trying boogie boards and surfing. Easy to see big waves coming from distance, with gradual beach break resulting in foam and spilling. Quiet pause just a few minutes from bus stop 35 to Kahului. (Maui) 20260111

Paia Mantokuji: Bronze temple bell for Soto Zen Buddhist temple delivered in 1912. Head minister from Hiroshima Prefecture arrived in 1903, with temple constructed in 1907. Some gravestones in the cemetery are framed with metal pipes, to protect against sliding into the sea. (Maui) 20260111

Ku'au Bay Beach Park: Rode Haiku Islander 35 bus from Kahului to Ku-au Mart and walked back along Hana Highway. Discovered quiet northside beach with families relaxing on the sandy shore. After turning in rental car after 7 days, pedestrian 8th day more like a native. (Paia, Maui) 20260111

Maui Institute: Picked up fallen mango from the tree, on tour around the farm. Fruit on property includes macademia, lemon, grapefruit, lichee, avocados, but breadfruit not in season. Dry conditions require registering for water rates, piping needed repair last year. (Makawao, Maui) 20260110

Ke'anae Arboretum Trail: Rainbow Eucalyptus trees not so brilliant on a rainy day. Easy walk on mostly paved surface until fence into private taro fields. Small turnoff by the Road to Hana, low key preservation area. (Ke'anae Arboretum Trail, Hana Highway, Kula, Maui) 20250105

Ke'anae Point: About halfway on Road to Hana, black lava north shoreline receiving pounding surf on a windy, rainy Monday. Old taro-producing Hawaiian village was mostly destroyed in 1946 by a tsunami from an Alaska 8.4 earthquake. Church survived, homes were rebuilt. (Keanae Road, Haiku, Maui)

Twin Falls Little Ho’olawa:  Lower falls saw tour guide and 2 young adults jump swim across, ascend, and jump into pool, followed by two elders.  Water looked walkable halfway, then dropoff revealed depth sufficient for plunge.  (Hana Highway, Haiku, Maui) 20260105

Twin Falls Big Ho’olawa: Easy path to upper stream, overlooking a lower falls into a pool, and then a higher falls around the bend. Younger visitors might dare following the rocky riverbank upwards, downplaying warning signs on a rainy day. First stop on the Road to Hana. (Haiku, Maui) 20260105

Kepaniwai Heritage Park: Memorial to Sun Yat-Sen from descendants of older brother Sun Mei, Hawaii in 1871. Family began growing rice in Honolulu, moving to Kahului General Store in 1881, starting ranch in Keokea. Sponsored education of the future doctor. (Iao Valley Road, Wailuku, Maui) 20260104

Kepaniwai Park: On Sunday afternoon, family cavorting in the 'Iao Stream inside a local park.  We brought our poke, and found 8 picnic pavilions providing cover in case of rain.  Typical group of teenagers in the parking lot making minor trouble.  (Iao Valley Road, Wailuku, Maui) 20260104

Waihe'e Ridge Trail: On the descent, we paused at the tree with the 1 mile marker on the other side. RDI followed us down to ensure we were safe. EKI was completing the ascent to the summit, and reported steeper inclines and pools of water, leading to muddy shoes. (Maui) 20260104

Waihe'e Ridge Trail: Over an hour of ascending, more than halfway to summit, this slippery stretch was the point at which we decided elders should be less ambitious about hiking. When I came back down, my feet slid, and I got one hand dirty with mud. EKI would proceed to the summit. (Maui) 20260104

Waihe'e Ridge Trail:  Overlook distant southeast, City of Kahului waterfront Village of Waiheʻe-Waiehu, then Waiheʻe River Gorge upstream southwest into West Maui Forest Reserve. About halfway to summit, we saw many descending with muddy shoes. Rain overnight gave us cloudy skies. (Maui) 20260104

El Toro Loco: Casual Peruvian cuisine near the Pacific Ocean, unfortunately on a rainy Saturday. Less than 24-hour stopover for family visit, since they moved from Oakland to Pacifica. Ceviche, jalea, chicharron de pescado, lomo saltado, for stomaches still on Eastern Time. (Pacifica) 20260102
