Paul Lindsay Dawson throws new light on the so-called 'Battle' of Wakefield in late December 1460.

The article comes from the Spring 2025 issue of 'Briefing', the magazine of the Yorkshire Archaeological & Historical Society.

Merry Christmas everyone!

It wasnโ€™t a target, it was a commitment, and it wasnโ€™t ambitious.

It was just a failure. And itโ€™s journalism like this that does the damage.

No one cares enough about this to solve it.

Sorry, I hadnโ€™t appreciated the artistry! Lovely stuff.

Hereโ€™s another Roman boxwood comb, again very fine, from Vindolanda near Hadrianโ€™s Wall. www.vindolanda.com/comb-with-case
Combs
Do you remember Nitty Nora, the school nurse who came to check small heads for head lice? Vindolanda has a large collection of boxwood hair combs which look remarkably like our nit combs of today.

Hereโ€™s a report on lice found on a Roman comb historicengland.org.uk/research/res... but the gaps look much smaller than the early medieval combs Iโ€™ve seen.

I keep talking about bone, but antler was much stronger, and therefore probably better to work with once you got a technique.
December 21, 2025 at 8:58 AM
Are these really fine enough to work as lice combs? The gaps need to be no more than 0.3 mm - any comb would help a little against lice but I doubt whether early medieval bone working was sufficiently advanced to saw so small a gap. Nina?

Are they that pinky colour all the time or is it just when theyโ€™re fruiting or something?

Canโ€™t change the past.

We can change the future though - concentrate on that.

Ah. Iโ€™m British, but I guess that means the opposite.

Ah, imagine how much better our lives in the UK would have been, if Johnson had crashed down out of his harness and a sensible Prime Minister had taken over.

I suspect that Ghana and Argentine are similarly unaffected too but that 0.00000001 of readersโ€™ lives there are wasted by checking it out.

Move that Bluesky automatically inserts national flags at the beginning of articles to indicate their origin.

The UK is going to be totally unaffected by heavy rain and high winds at this time.
