Westward and Southern would end in 1982, and be replaced with TSW, and the introduction of TV-am in 1983, launched just after the BBC's own Breakfast service called Breakfast Time

Westward TV broadcasts Drake's Venture on the ITV network. Starring John Thaw and Paul Darrow.

During an advert break, ITN has a Newsflash announcing that the IBA is removing Westward and Southern's ITV franchises. ATV must restructure. TV-am to begin in 1983.
Drake's Venture is a one-off drama broadcast on ITV on 28 December 1980. Produced to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Francis Drake's voyage of circumnavigation, it focuses on the voyage's most controversial aspect, the execution of the gentleman Thomas Doughty for mutiny. The cast includes John Thaw, Charlotte Cornwell, Paul Darrow, Terence Budd, Roger Adamson, Paul Alexander, Peter Cellier, Alan Downer, Michael Irving, Esmond Knight, David Ryall, Michael Stroud, Michael Turner, Michael Goldie, John Curless, Philip Trewinnard, David Shaw, Alan Penn, Doel Lubcombe and Martin Bax. A Westward Television production in association with Bayerischer Rundfunk. On 28 December 1980, ITN interrupted a commercial break on ITV to broadcast a Newsflash. The news was that the IBA had announced their decision on the franchises from 1982. ATV were to sell 49% of their shares and restructure with 2 separate news services for the East and West Midlands. Their London base at Elstree was to be closed and they would have to be completely based in their region. Their name was to be changed. Thames and Granada were also told to sell shares. Tyne Tees and Yorkshire would have separate owners after the forced disbanding of Trident Television. Southern TV and Westward TV to lose their franchises to TVS and TSW. TV-am are awarded the first ITV Breakfast Television franchise to begin in 1983.

‘One Piece’ Season 1 has officially ended after 26 years and 1,156 episodes.

The show will now enter a seasonal format starting on April 5th.

- BBC Two showed A Gert Lush Christmas. With Russell Howard.
- ITV broadcast one-off drama Peter & Wendy. With Paloma Faith and Stanley Tucci.
Lorna Doone is a feature length drama shown on ITV on 26 December 1990. Based on the novel by RD Blackmore. West country yeoman John Ridd vows to avenge the death of his father by destroying the land-grabbing Doone family. Then he meets, and immediately falls in love with, the beautiful and innocent Lorna Doone. The cast includes Clive Owen, Sean Bean, Polly Walker, Billie Whitelaw, Miles Anderson, Kenneth Haigh, Jane Gurnett, Robert Stephens, Euan Grant Maclachlan, Michael Mackenzie, Andrew Ferguson, Claire Madden, Paul Young, Martin Heller, Rachel Kempson and Hugh Fraser. A Thames Television production. Shaun the Sheep: The Farmer's Llamas is an animated television special based on the television programme Shaun the Sheep by Nick Park and broadcast on BBC One on 26 December 2015. When the Farmer and Bitzer go to a Country Fair, Shaun steals away with them intent on causing mischief. Besotted by the exotic creatures he spots at auction, Shaun cleverly gets the unwitting Farmer to buy them. Back at Mossy Bottom Farm, Shaun is delighted with his prank and convinces the flock that the llamas are just what they need to spice up their lives. At first everything's great fun, but soon their new llama room-mates get a bit too comfortable in their new home. Furthermore, they're all on at the couple to get married - except for jaundiced Uncle Tony, who gets Dan so stoned that his subsequent actions send Lisa back to London on her own. Fortunately the family rallies to ensure that Dan has a Gert Lush Christmas. The cast includes Russell Howard, Hannah Britland, Neil Morrissey, Sophie Thompson, Kerry Howard, Greg Davies, Maggie O'Neill, Felix Hayes, Douggie McMeekin, Sam Pamphilon, Jayde Adams, Keith Chegwin, Pat Sharp and Alun Cochrane. An Avalon production for BBC. Peter & Wendy is a one-off television film shown on ITV on 26 December 2015. The film is based on the play and novel by JM Barrie, blending it with an original narrative set in the present day. The film draws a connection between the stories of Barrie and the real life Great Ormond Street Hospital, to which Barrie gave the rights to the story in 1929, a few years before his death. The cast includes Stanley Tucci, Paloma Faith, Laura Fraser, Hazel Doupe, Woody Norman, Zak Sutcliffe, Rasmus Hardiker, Dan Tetsell, Asim Chaudhry and Ricky Champ. 2005 - the final episode of The Two Ronnies Sketchbook on BBC One. Ronnie Barker's final show before he passed away.

1995 - the Bucket woman had her final episode as Keeping Up Appearances ended on BBC 1.
Downton Abbey the television series was broadcast on ITV from 26 September 2010 to 25 December 2015. 6 series totalling 52 episodes were made. The Two Ronnies Sketchbook was broadcast on BBC One from 18 March to 25 December 2005. It was the last series that Ronnie Barker appeared in before his passing. Keeping Up Appearances was broadcast on BBC 1 from 29 October 1990 to 25 December 1995. 5 series totalling 44 episodes were made.

Designed the idents that launched Channel 4 in 1982
Martin Lambie-Nairn was born on 5 August 1945 and passed away on 25 December 2020 at the age of 75. He was a designer. Martin was the founder of his branding agency Lambie-Nairn and was the creative director of branding agency ML-N. He is recognised for having redefined television brand identity design, being the first to embrace computer technologies to apply branding to screen-based media. Lambie-Nairn's most famous television idents is the Channel 4 launch set in 1982.

Two Wallace & Gromit adventures debuted on this day in years gone by.

Channel 4 debuts A Grand Day Out in 1990. The duo's first adventure travelling to the moon to get some cheese!

BBC 2 debuts A Close Shave in 1995. Gromit is imprisoned, can Wallace (and the sheep) rescue him?
A Grand Day Out is a claymation production first shown on Channel 4 on 24 December 1990. The film centres on an eccentric yet good-natured inventor Wallace and his mute but intelligent pet dog, Gromit, who decide to build a home-made rocket ship and make a trip to the moon in search of cheese. It was directed, animated and co-written by Nick Park at the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield and Aardman Animations in Bristol. Peter Sallis is the voice of Wallace. A Close Shave is a claymation production first shown on BBC 2 on 24 December 1995. In the film, Wallace and Gromit are operating a window cleaning service, when Wallace falls for the owner of the local wool shop, Wendolene Ramsbottom. The duo find that Wendolene is an unwitting accomplice in a sheep rustling operation operated by her malevolent pooch, Preston. It was directed, animated and co-written by Nick Park. Peter Sallis is the voice of Wallace, Anne Reid is the voice of Wendolene. The film won an Oscar. A co-production of Aardman Animations, Wallace and Gromit Ltd, BBC Bristol, BBC Children's International and BBC Worldwide.

BBC 1 shows one-off fantasy drama The Bells of Astercote. Based on Penelope Lively's novel. With Siobhan Brooks and Ifor Williams.
Bod is a children's animated television programme first shown on BBC 1 on 23 December 1975. Just 13 episodes were made and based on four original Bod books by Joanne and Michael Cole. The series is narrated by John Le Mesurier and Maggie Henderson with music by Derek Griffiths. Bod is a boy who lives in a town with Aunt Flo, PC Copper, Frank the Postman and Farmer Barleymow. There is also another segment which appears with each episode called Alberto Frog and his Amazing Animal Band. This section features short extracts from famous pieces of classical music, and usually ends with Alberto choosing a different flavour of milkshake as his reward. The Bells of Astercote is a one-off family fantasy drama broadcast on BBC 1 on 23 December 1980. Based on the novel by Penelope Lively and adapted for television by Valerie Georgeson. Two children, Mair and Peter, have recently moved into an old village with their father. One day they enter the forbidden Tranters' Wood when their dog wanders off into it and encounter a strange character called Goacher. He offers to treat their dog when it is injured, and soon they get to meet the reclusive Tranter family. But there is a secret that the family are guarding, and one day Mair has strange visions in the woods of ghosts of the past, and a threat that could yet befall the village. The cast includes Siobhan Brooks, Ifor Williams, John Branwell, Janis Winters, Ivor Roberts, Kristine Howarth, Alison Rolfe, Richard Hunter, John Malcolm, Davyd Harries, Brenda Cowling, Lloyd Lamble, Sarah Grazebrook, Bill McGuirk and Pat Quayle.

ITV News Channel closed on 23 December 2005. It originally began life as the ITN News Channel when it launched on 1 August 2000. It was a partnership between ITN and NTL. In 2002, ITN was replaced by Carlton and Granada as the partners with NTL and the Channel was renamed. By 2004, ITV were the sole owners. On 23 December 1950, the BBC Television Service broadcast its very first variety show from their new studios in Lime Grove. Tommy Cooper was your host for the evening and Dolores Gray was the star attraction.
