Thank you for the response!

@sportsinfosolutions.com I know defense is tricky to quantify, but I’m looking for some sort of reference to show why Joey Ortiz rates so poorly in DRS and yet by OAA and my own perception, looks like an elite defender.

Just something Brewer defenders do that doesn’t evaluate well in DRS? Thanks!

I’m sorry, but what on earth was this 2019 Rhys Hoskins season.

Freddy Peralta’s season likely won’t end in a Cy Young nod, but important to recognize how incredible it’s been for the Crew.

NL Ranks:
7th in WAR
7th in ERA
8th in IP
9th in Ks
10th in WHIP
10th in cWPA

It’s so funny looking at each Brewers baseball savant page because they almost all look exactly the same.

This could be Sal, Joey, Blake, Caleb, Monasterio, or Seigler but in particular it’s Isaac Collins.

I will never stop talking about the Vaughn Mower

$48 million more than the club-friendly deal Chourio signed

Manny Machado needs 56 hits in the Padres final 48 games to tie his single season career high at age 32 in his 14th year

I want another infielder as much as anyone, but there’s very little reason to believe the brewers underlying stats won’t continue. Eugenio Suarez would not take Joey Ortiz out of the lineup.
July 31, 2025 at 2:10 PM
I’m not saying the Brewers offense couldn’t use the addition of a big power bat, but it is crazy to me that every year, fans convince themselves that prospects are not valuable, trades only count when they happen at the deadline, and being good is not good enough
July 31, 2025 at 2:09 PM
More under the radar trade candidates for the Brewers:
Nolan Jones (to play 3B)
Otto Lopez
Jonathan India
Chase Meidroth
Yoan Moncada
July 30, 2025 at 6:45 PM
And then place Contreras on the IL and hope rest without surgery is enough to get him back by October
July 28, 2025 at 5:05 PM
My out of left field Brewers move would be to get a young, controllable SS like an Otto Lopez along with Liam Hicks who can be serviceable at catcher allowing you to retain Haase as a backup and not rely on elevating Feliciano to be an everyday backstop right away
July 28, 2025 at 5:04 PM
Suarez would be a clear offensive improvement at 3B but that hasn’t been a clear weakness with the emergence of Durbin.

Maybe Durbin to 2B and Turang to SS but his bat could fall off with the increased defensive demand

William Contreras has posted a .625 OPS over the same time. The thumb is clearly bothering him. Similarly, he’s a very good defender at one of the hardest positions to replace.
July 28, 2025 at 4:34 PM
I think “upgrade Joey Ortiz” is a lazy way to look at the Brewers. .692 OPS the last 2 months. Not good and not bad. Meanwhile, he’s provided 7 Outs Above Average and is in the 71st percentile for baserunning value.

Of course, we’d all love to have Bobby Witt Jr. but Ortiz is not the biggest prob

Crazy that it took Zack Wheeler until he was 28 to become a really great starting pitcher and now he’s a perennial Cy Young contender.

Probably won’t make the HOF but I hope his stretch of being one of the best pitchers in baseball isn’t forgotten.

Other notable Brewers during that stretch

Caleb Durbin - .314/.395/.458
Jackson Chourio - .295/.336/.502
Isaac Collins - .295/.405/.455
Christian Yelich - .339/.403/.582
Sal Frelick - .310/.352/.408
William Contreras - .235/.324/.332
Brice Turang - .268/.333/.361

A lot has been said about Joey Ortiz’s awful offensive numbers on the year, but in the 49 games after May 21st, he’s hit .260 with an OPS of .729

Decent enough offensive numbers while being an elite defender can’t be disregarded.

Hospitalized for 43 days a couple years ago, and now Brewers 2024 4th round draft pick Marco Dinges is slashing .323/.426/.532 good for a farm-leading .958 OPS across 58 games for both the Carolina Mudcats (A) and Wisconsin Timberrattlers (A+)
July 22, 2025 at 1:46 PM
If you needed any more evidence that Pat Murphy is going to stick to his pitching plan, Brandon Woodruff pulled at 62 pitches through 6 innings.

6IP / 2 H / 0 BB / 5Ks on 62 pitches is the final line
July 22, 2025 at 3:16 AM
Unless they aim to keep 3 in order to finally spell Contreras and his broken thumb for a spell but considering the injury timeline, I can’t imagine a couple extra days of rest will help that much
July 21, 2025 at 3:46 PM
Don’t know how much longer Eric Haase will remain the backup catcher for the Brewers with top prospect Jefferson Quero sporting a .883 OPS over his last 30 AAA games

11 ABs so take it with a grain of salt, but considering Caleb Durbin's rise to being a consistent hitter in the Brewers' lineup, I can see Seigler developing into a nice platoon bat with him at the hot corner. Assuming the Crew doesn't make a move for someone at the deadline.

#Brewers starting pitching was a question mark coming into the season, but 2 years removed from a big 3 with Burnes and Woodruff, here are their starters ERAs (min. 40 IP)

-Quinn Priester 2.49
-Freddy Peralta 2.76
-José Quintana 2.98
-Chad Patrick 3.32
