For decades, I avoided em-dashes because others used them as the universal punctuation mark. Editors and other colleagues coaxed me into using them occasionally. They became part of my repertoire.

Now here we are. Fucking AI.

If Netflix's acquisition means I will be able to stream TCM, I'm all for it.

Quick! Recommend an instrumental soundtrack or album with a dreamlike quality.

Nothing too tranquil, but also not too rousing. Eerie and suspenseful is just the ticket. Bonus points for something fairly recent that I probably haven't heard.

Finally realized I've long had a sure-fire method of triggering a long writing surge: draw a hot bath, and while the water runs smooth out just a few lines.

The film that introduced me to my favorite Spanish actors, Luis Tosar and Javier Bardem, is now playing on Kanopy (free if you have a library card). I discovered it at the great @scarecrowvideo.bsky.social or possibly at @siffnews.bsky.social.

Mondays in the Sun (2002). Highly recommended.

While searching for something else, I found the original outline for Prince of Wolves. The elevator pitch was "Indiana Jones meets Brotherhood of the Wolf in Transylvania."

Current focus: Criterion Channel, Bi Gan & Tarkovsky, then revisiting Fellini. Will dip back into folk horror by spring. Open to recommendations from arthouse to grindhouse.

When I first saw Caught by the Tides, my reaction was that it felt awfully similar to some of his previous films.

TIL, months later, that 10 scenes were pulled directly from those earlier pictures.

Do I deserve partial credit or need a cognitive exam for not realizing the whole truth?

My love for the first film is disproportionate to its modestly positive reviews. It's a CHEESY NORWEGIAN KAIJU COMEDY. It's perfect.
