Someone on Threads said it better, and mind you I like the album a lot…
I keep seeing the praises for Rosalía and l've been like ••‹ do I say the thing I'm thinking... that's not that? Music aside because she's undeniably a brilliant singer and producer and sonically it's a beautifully arranged project — but is Rosalía following a familiar arc? Doing the Ariana thing .. the Miley thing... The "white girl tries to be edgy through hip-hop" except in her case, Reggaetón... 1/3 + Cozying up to that world, dating high profile artists within it, gaining cultural cachet and then when there's a sense of dismay or it no longer serves them, they revert by "sanitizing" back to their "white roots," in her case through referencing deeply colonial Iberic Catholicism Especially now, as it's fascinating timing, when Eurocentrism feels more "in vogue" again and as more "refined in quality" than diversity. 2/3 + I get that she's an experimental artist and truthfully I am glad she's (back) here - in many ways I hope she stays "here" but the whole arrival "back home" feels a bit... nauseating. & for the "but it is diverse, she sings in different languages on the album!!" crowd - the Spanish, historically took and collected anything they deemed theirs. The ability/audacity to dip in & out of places & cultures as they pleased has always been a foundational issue of the power dynamic & part of this critique 3/3

Bad Bunny and his concert #BadBunnyUnaMas was a Puerto Rican showcase, not a Latino one… the whole thing was rooted in PR #PuertoRico #BlueskyPuertoRico #BlueskyPR
A lot of people mean well when talking about Latino identity, but some of the "Latino" discourse around Bad Bunny's #BadBunnyUnaMas concert rubs me the wrong way. Some folks unintentionally erase the message: this was PUERTO RICAN, not "Latino" or anything else. Celebrate it, enjoy it...but call it what it is It was held on the 7th anniversary of Hurricane María's landfall. It was a showcase of working-class Puerto Rican culture, including the houses like the ones we grew up in. It was about reguetón, Bomba y Plena, the celebration of the African roots of this genre, and most importantly, the songs. The songs are about Puerto Rico-whether they're about sex, love, friendships, going to the beach, joy, sadness, nostalgia, missing friends, the diaspora, our accents, our language, our quirks. All of those are rooted in Puerto Rico, nowhere else.

This part of the concert was so bittersweet. Making us remember the 4,645 people that died from govt negligence because of Hurricane Maria 8 years ago TODAY.
All while dancing, & being joyous… nothing explains life in the Caribbean better…finding joy in community during hard times #badbunnyunamas
