a med format film photo i took

part of a series of images of decorated and painted mannequin heads. no one knew exactly where they came from.

the store where they lived has closed, and they've been scattered to the winds. i have 3

i made a print so large that i decided to do a lil video exploration.

the photographer wrote on the back of the small print he made:

in amongst the ever increasing photos of children-being-children are the last few attempts of his lingering photographic soul. eventually he was too busy to take photos at all. his work on wheat stem rust probably saved 1000s of lives soo...i guess it's fine.

negs are from early 50's?
December 23, 2025 at 5:24 PM
negative / positive

he printed 1 of this neg and wrote on the back that the soldiers threw cigarettes on the quay to watch the fights. and a word he used tells me he was in China.

these are 2 different pictures i took of the negative: one close-up section, and one of the full negative

and back at home was a girl he married, who had three kids... and one of them had two kids. . . and one of them became my spouse. which is how we've ended up here.

i don't think he was supposed to take this photo. it was extremely underexposed. i overexposed my photo of the negative, and then hugely increased contrast in the deep shadows (curves). i couldn't even tell what the photographic subject was until then.

film negatives are amazing.

he had a knack for people. that's him in the back of the rickshaw. he must've set a timer and jumped in for the photo, which probably explains the rickshaw operators bemused expression

inverted color photos of black and white negatives on a light table.
i haven't figured out the format

I'm not sure i even want to scan these properly... the curls and rot are become a piece of the thing itself. if i carefully digitise them, i would sever the aura they've earned...

or I'll just take both paths. prolly both. that'll keep me busy for months

o my. i found ALL the negatives
there are so many

including nagasaki a few months after the a-bomb. i've already seen handwritten descriptions of the trip, but now i have the negatives.

i have a lot of sorting to do

(these seem to be his first trip after returning home. yosemite?)

i'm working on a new project to keep myself sane

/found photos by a distant relative/dessicated newspapers from the end of WW2/carefully handwritten notes by the same relative, who was on a ship near Japan when the bombs were dropped

the box kept getting passed down w/out opening it. time capsule.

this book is amazing. it has so much forgotten/misplaced history that ACTUALLY HAPPENED. studying modernism left me with a bunch of facts that stack-up like loose bricks; this book--and the history it tells--is the mortar, transforming everything else into a coherent whole. and its so well written!
@jamesmartinsj.bsky.social hello! I was just talking to friends about my book—a history of science and #transgender rights in the shadow of the Nazis. It has been a target; I have been, myself: threats, stalkers, all for sharing an actual history of the #LGBTQ Weimar era. I wrote it for classroom 1/
