A poorly taken photo of an Eastern Towhee seeking snacks on a backyard deck. The deck has been stripped of its old stain, but still needs to be sanded and given a fresh coat of stain. But enough about the deck, this bird is not a regular visitor. I think this is only the third time I've seen one in the 22 years I've lived in this house. First time getting a decent picture of him. A Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) enjoying a sugary drink on a lovely summer afternoon. I'm enjoying playing guitar out on the deck. This feeder, by the way, is so easy to clean. It's a small mason jar style feeder. I highly recommend it. #birds #hummingbirds

Despite having very little rain recently, the trees are still quite green in the background. Next to the feeder hangs a swing designed for the hummingbirds to rest upon. A poorly taken photo of a pair of Song Sparrows on a backyard deck. The adult on the right is feeding the juvenile on the left. The younger bird's beak is slightly open, and it looks a little blurry because its wings are doing that rapid flappy thing that young birds do when they want to be fed. As it's mid-August, I'm wondering if this is a second brood child. I was a second child also. Anyways... the deck is finally stripped of the old stain and is ready for a new coat of stain. I could use a new coat for winter, but let's not hurry to get there. I'm still enjoying summer. I hope you enjoy your day!!!

One of our local juvenile Red-tailed Hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) caught a small ground rodent yesterday. I'm not sure if it was the first successful predation, but it has definitely learned that we have snacks in our yard. Here it is this morning looking for more snacks. #birds #hawks

A pair of House Finches and a pair of American Goldfinches enjoying breakfast snacks together in a green plastic bird bath that we turned into a bird feeder. 4 bird baths are enough. 5 is just silly. Not that silly is bad. I relish in my own silliness often. Anyway, back to describing the picture. The bird bath/feeder is on a backyard deck that has been partially prepped for a new coat of stain. I'll eventually finish that chore if we eventually get a weekend where it isn't deadly hot or pouring rain. Did I get distracted from the photo description again? Not seen in the picture is that the bird bath/feeder is under an awning so that the snacking birds don't become easy snacks themselves. The hawks around here are relentless. And always hungry, it seems. So.... today's theme is to be silly and relentless. Have fun!!

A juvenile Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) trying to figure out the whole hunting for snacks thing. It just learned that power lines are not easy to land on. It was super funny watching it swing back and forth, wings flapping until it achieved the balance point. #birds #hawks

A large pine tree with an undulating trunk is also in the background. That particular tree is one of the tallest along the road and a frequent place for our local predatory birds to look out for snacks. The power line does not usually host larger birds. Small and mid-sized birds all the time, but this may be the first time I've seen a hawk land there. Watching it try to get its balance after landing was very, very funny. Speaking of funny, have some fun today!!

If you're not familiar with juvenile Red-tailed hawks, they are obnoxiously loud and constantly shrieking. The nest isn't far away. Just across the street and about 100 yards into the woods. I had a visit from a pair of baby Cayuga (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) ducks at work today. ❤️ #birds #ducks

The fuzzy brown downy feathers feel as soft as they look like they would, and the beaks and webbed feet are a shiny black. Yup. I got to pet baby ducks today. The Guitar Center logo on the sign on the floor next to the birds might provide a hint to where I work. We don't usually have bird visitors inside our store, so this was quite special for a birder like myself. I hope you get to pet a baby duck soon, too!!
