As we head into the new year, let's all be gentle with ourselves and our bodies. You are the one who determines your own goals. You are the one who knows what food makes you feel good and nourished. You are the one who gets decide what you eat. Trust yourself.
This is your annual reminder that your body is not a “before picture”. Despite getting bombarded over the next few weeks with advertisements for intentional weight loss, remember that it’s okay, encouraged even, to love yourself no matter how you are and to nourish your body with what it needs.

Zohran Mamdani doesn’t make me, an American Jew, feel unsafe.

Having the Coast Guard, which falls under the Department of Homeland Security, decide that a swastika isn’t really a symbol of hate? That makes me, an American Jew, feel pretty damn unsafe.

Any good posts or things you think I should include in Friday's lecture?
I usually give a lecture in my grad-level survey design class about political polling. This year I want to update it and focus more on general policy opinion polls. Anyone have good resources or examples I should reference?

We leave the determination of reasonable accommodation to the experts, and our job as professors is to accommodate as instructed.

In fact, we can learn a lot about good teaching by considering which accommodations might help all students if built into our policies (e.g. extensions and recordings)
I’m sorry but it’s not up to you to decide if a student’s accommodations are unreasonable. if a student did everything necessary to get accommodations for “anxiety” then trust me, they need them. I once tried to apply for accommodations & it was so heartless & confusing I gave up.

NYC-based people - I'm looking for an adjunct instructor to teach an undergraduate course *this fall* at NYU called Power and Politics of Data. There's a lot of flexibility in what the course could look like, but I'm also happy to share ideas and the job ad. DM me if you think you're interested.

40. Probably the most valuable service provided by methodologists is wading through dense stats papers, and figuring out what's actually useful for applied social scientists.
