In the military, I learned the importance of taking responsibility for my own actions. The “SecWar” must have missed that training. This cowardly attempt to shift blame for his order onto a subordinate is yet another example of why Pete Hegseth is unfit to lead.

Hegseth may have ordered a war crime. Trump just closed airspace around Venezuela. And Stephen Miller is laying the groundwork to deport people without due process. Investigate the alleged war crime. Repeal the outdated AUMFs. Limit the Alien Enemies Act. Our security and our values depend on it.

Illegal orders must be refused. Every service member knows that. Mark Kelly said it plainly. I served 8 years as a military lawyer, and that principle is core to our oath. Trump and Pete Hegseth are twisting that truth to attack a veteran and distract from their failures.

Trump just crossed a line no president should ever touch. Today he openly embraced political violence against Democratic veterans who reminded him that our oath is to the Constitution, not to unlawful orders. I stand with the veterans who spoke up. Trump’s rhetoric is reckless and dangerous.

I walked past the White House Peace Vigil every day when I was an external at the WH. For 44 years, that tent stood for free speech and nuclear disarmament. Trump ordered it torn down.
