New Working Paper! Why do policies that reinforce unequal opportunities persist? Some blame elites. I argue less secure families defend these "boundaries" against reform and call this "boundary defense". I test this on a 2010 referendum against school reform in Hamburg. I'll be presenting a poster on one of my job market papers at APSA in Vancouver today from 12:30-1 PM, as part of the Comparative Politics Section! @searchliaison.bsky.social decided the first day of APSA of all possible days that my website hosted *by them* is a phishing scam 😅 you can still bypass the @developer.chrome.com warning and reach my site. Resolving but in the meantime please email me at Danielroberts @ g.harvard.edu if you have qs!

What we're seeing in the intra-MAGA coalition brouhaha (besides the surface ethno-racial animus), is the the top of a self-perceived "ends against the middle" coalition trying to assert itself and realizing that its coalition-mates are actually among the insecure middle (thread)

Utterly unconscionable that any legislator, in the wake of a (botched, but nonetheless real) coup attempt in a democracy where military authoritarianism is in living memory, would think any route other than impeachment and removal is acceptable re: Yoon

Yoon's Auto-Coup resembles more than anything, Pedro Castillo's in Peru late 2022. Withdrawal of military from Assembly after it voted with quorum to end martial law reflects strength of dem norms. Nonetheless, with Assembly windows left broken by military, a genuine and volatile Auto-Coup attempt.
If I'm seeing correctly, looks like the military is leaving the National Assembly and all major broadcasting stations continue to broadcast the events without interference. Might have to add botched martial law to the list of Yoon's incompetencies.

It's clear Yoon was emboldened by Trump's victory. It is imperative that Biden administration deploy maximum leverage as strongly and quickly as possible to ensure stability of South Korean liberal democracy in peril. Yoon's Auto-Coup cannot withstand US opposition, but may be too late by 1/20/25
The White House said in a statement that "the administration is in contact with the ROK government and is monitoring the situation closely."
December 3, 2024 at 3:28 PM
It has become clear that Yoon's auto-coup is being conducted with the support of at least some significant portion of military forces. A Martial Law Commander has declared political rallies banned, and martial law forces are entering the national Assembly to take control

Very grave news from South Korea. This isn't just rhetorical, Yoon is declaring the legislative branch a state enemy over the opposition of even his own co-partisans. The institutions will hopefully stand, but this is a self-coup attempt in a liberal democracy plain and simple.
Breaking News: President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea declared emergency martial law, invoking “anti-state” forces and criticizing attempts to impeach him.

Confused by The Boy and the Heron, Miyazaki's latest? You aren't alone, Oscar-winner is enigmatic. A bit afield my usual Political Economy stuff, in @sensesofcinema.bsky.social, I argue it should be seen as both taboo political critique and auteur's autobiography Thread 1/
