New publication! In @iajournal.bsky.social, @debremaria.bsky.social and I show the emergence of hollow multilateralism, whereby autocracies use the rules and principles of the liberal international order to hollow out the system from within. Our paper is open access! academic.oup.com/ia/article/1...
Hollow multilateralism: how autocracies contest the norms and procedures of international organizations
When autocracies promote multilateralism, are they using liberal language to hollow out established rules from within, and seeking to exclude non-state act

A short article of mine on civil-military relations and democratic backsliding had been accepted for publication in the journal "Connections".

Then I received an email that the editors can't publish the paper unless I "remove the case study/examples of the United States" (1/x)

New project! Happy to be granted the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B) by the JSPS for my project on hollow multilateralism. In this four-year project, I will assess how autocracies are increasingly pushing for new norms and institutions that challenge conventional notions of multilateralism.
