Can't meditate?
Sit quietly and look at "can't meditate-ness".

No-one knows wealth like the poor.

No-one knows health like the sick.

No-one knows youth like the elderly.

No-one knows freedom like the imprisoned.

Pleasure-seeking is a race to rock bottom.

Next June, I'll be giving 2 in-person talks on spirituality, business and how they go together.

I'd really like to meet you and shake your hand.

If you resonate with what I write, this is a rare opportunity for us to get together and share ideas face-to-face.

You are the center of the universe.
So is everyone else.

Stress dissolves when you see that it’s like a cloud in the sky.

It seems to obscure awareness, which is like the sun.

Yet, you would not see the cloud if not for the light of the sun!

And, of course, above the clouds—no matter how big and dark they are—is perfect, clear, neon blue sky.

Your problems begin when you judge your experiences.

You reject pain and wish for less of it.

You approve pleasure and wish for more of it.

Thus, you are in opposition to reality.

And the salt in the wound is that this opposition hinders your ability to make things better.

The stability you’re looking for is found when you recognize that awareness is not affected by any of its contents, no matter how unpleasant they are.

If you're trying to be present, you're just creating more of the noise you're trying to silence.

We often think that if we want to be present we must apply effort, control and discipline in meditation.

Religion is like an ornate box.

Inside is often wisdom.

But if you look inside and appreciate the wisdom, you no longer need the box.

The great wisdom teachers braved austerity, exile, even threat of murder to share their teachings.

The least we can do is listen.

There’s always something more urgent than meditation.

But until you understand yourself deeply, you’re running at 50% effectiveness.

That’s why the urgent things pile up faster than you can tick them off.

Evidence of fire-making 400,000 years ago was just discovered in England.

Think about how many of our ancestors spent their entire lives just trying to be warm, safe and fed.

Instant gratitude.

A mirror is not sullied when it reflects a messy room.
Awareness is not sullied when it reflects a messy thought.

You can only be truly comfortable to the degree that you’re vulnerable.

You can’t save everyone.

If you try, you’ll save no-one.

And if you keep trying, you’ll need saving yourself.

Relaxation of thinking is a consequence of deepening recognition of the nature of thoughts, not a goal to be pursued actively.

The problem with AI isn’t that it can’t do things,
it’s that it doesn’t know when it can’t do things.

The urge to create increases in proportion to our alignment with natural compassion.

Typical teachings on meditation are about changing the contents of mind.

They miss the key point that everything—even the most desperate confusion—is perceived with perfect clarity.

It is much better to simply recognize this clarity, again and again, until it becomes obvious that it is our nature.

My father built the largest independent insurance brokerage in the UK.

My mother was never inclined to work.

Before I found balance, it was as if the two of them were fighting within me.

When I found balance, I discovered a harmony of doing and non-doing.

1. Fuck up

2. Find the lesson

3. Find the laughter

If you only meditate on the breath, you're pretty fucked when you're on a ventilator--which is when you need meditation most.

Meditate on everything.

Then you'll see that you don't have to meditate on anything.
