Miharu nodded and winked. Then she dug into her backpack and pulled the silver RRI case out. She opened it for a moment to display the contents. “The latest version, direct from the RRI development lab. The Medical Center can install the implants easily with the instructions Ai sent. But after that, it will be forty-eight hours before you have full sensory perception in VR immersion. It takes that long for the nanobots to extrude the nanowire implants into the right addresses in your brain.” Limei would have jumped with joy if she hadn’t been floating in mid-air. She settled for pounding on Miharu’s shoulder while holding on with the other hand. “You just jumped to the top of my favorite people list!” She reached for the case, but Miharu held up a finger.

Amber broke in. “Let's buckle up and head for orbit. We can talk on the way.” Everyone sat. Amber was one of those people others tended to obey without question. As the luxurious twelve-seat spaceplane rolled away from the terminal and left Hawaii in a vertical climb, Miharu felt more relaxed than she had since Dalyet called. Even the three gravities of acceleration that made breathing a laborious task didn’t dampen her mood. Ed and Carol were family, but these people were her posse—together, they could take on whatever lay ahead. She just wished that Ai and Addy had come along. Without the two Earth-born sentient AIs, the group wasn’t complete. But Cirrus’s presence gave her a sentient AI in her corner, so she couldn’t complain.

Hippy looked above, searching for the ship, but couldn’t find it. That’s when she remembered that she and the anchor were in a slow tumble. She felt a rush of panic and choked. The anchor and the ship had been stationary relative to each other when she jumped. Now, the anchor’s tumble made aiming her jump a magnitude of difficulty harder. She sighed and glanced down again at the yellow button to reassure herself. I have options. Why worry? She gathered her legs under herself and stared above. On the fifth rotation, she spotted the ship and launched herself. She fixed her eyes on the ship, but it drifted to her left. Looks like I don’t have to worry about accidentally hitting it. Okay, Ilyon. Let’s see how much you’ve learned.

Foundation Day -354, Kizunor, Captain Chelya’s office, Earth Orbit Captain Chelya paced along the wall in his round office, seventy-five steps per lap. He was passing behind his desk chair when there was a brief knock at the door, and it opened before Chelya could say anything. Senior Scholar Ilyon entered, extended his palms briefly from his sides toward the Captain, then dropped into one end of the deep, half-moon-shaped couches after helping himself to a glass of root water from a side table. After Chelya had settled on the far side of the couch, more or less opposite him, Ilyon said, “You said you needed me, so I dropped everything and came. You also said Ambassador Miharu is coming to visit, but you sounded upset. That’s strange since you are usually happy to see her. So, what’s the problem, and how can I help?” Ilyon’s directness breached Teewun etiquette, but the two old friends were always informal in private. Chelya caught Ilyon’s eyes and held them. “I think Miharu knows about Dalyet.”

Ai shook her head slowly, then lifted her head and locked eyes with Miharu. “Keeping secrets for the Teewuns was my main job until you agreed to be their ambassador and accepted the CEO job at RRI. And I think they have the right to keep some secrets—after all, every Earth nation has secrets. Even so, I would have told you about the colony if I’d been sure. But you can imagine how even a hint that the Teewuns were hiding things might have undermined the settlement negotiations. The street riots would have started all over again, and landing permission at the settlements might have been withdrawn. I couldn’t risk that without knowing for sure.”

Foundation Day -354, VR home of Jeff, Ai, and Addy Every time she visited, Miharu was freshly amazed by the virtual home Dr. Aiko Trapp had programmed for her family. Today, a wide beach was visible outside the large, south-facing window. It featured palm trees with pink leaves and a room-sized blue and white chessboard raked into the sand. Two young giraffes arched their necks over the pieces, intent on their game. Aiko’s husband, Jeff, lounged under a beach umbrella, watching as the shorter giraffe declined the Queen’s Gambit by playing the Slav Defense. The contrast with the view out the frost-tinged north windows was surreal. On that side of the home, a mix of human and Teewun children could be seen skating on a frozen pond. Jeff and Aiko’s adopted daughter, Addy, moved among the skaters, shouting advice and encouragement.

If he opens negotiations with us, I’ll ask him to pay us back for the landing ship and the supplies we sent with him.” Amber raised a hand. “I'm a guest here; I have no stake in this discussion. But I suggest we remain calm and ask Governor Dalyet to explain his thoughts fully.” Miharu chuckled softly as she turned to face Amber. “Yes, but you actually do have a stake in this discussion. One of Dalyet’s additional requests is for you to establish a branch of the Global University on Titan. And I've already asked him to explain his thinking several times.

So, one day she made plans to crash the human party at dinner. She’d asked Hippy—Senior Doctor Hippocrates—to go with her, thinking that a Teewun presence would discourage the humans from asking too many awkward questions. Hippy had nursed her back to health after she came aboard the Kizunor. Along the way, she had become Limei’s closest friend and confidant on the ship. When they stepped into the room, every jaw dropped at the unexpected sight of an unknown human aboard the ship. Marcos—their team leader—had begun to fire off questions. But Hippy was magnificent: she silenced Marcos with a sharp trill and a raised palm, saying only, “Limei is my patient. She needs friends, not questions. Ambassador Miharu is aware of Limei’s situation, and that’s all you need to know for now. So be patient, and Limei will tell you her story when she is ready.”

An hour later, they were sipping root water and chatting over red mushrooms with mint-green sauce. Chloey dipped a mushroom deep into the sauce and dropped it into her mouth. Zach shuddered slightly. “Chloey, it only takes a tiny dab of sauce to bring out the flavor. That must be burning your mouth raw.” “Nope. It’s delicious,” she answered, reaching for another scarlet mushroom and closing her eyes as she dropped it into her mouth. Zach shook his head and waggled his ears. “Some people would consider it rude to hog the sauce.” Chloey’s ears swiveled back in concern. She opened one eye and asked, “Do you think I’m being rude?” Zach realized she hadn’t seen his ears, so she didn’t know he’d been joking. He waggled his ears vigorously. “Not at all.”

A small campfire crackled as an Arizona summer sunset painted the western sky, silhouetting a giant saguaro cactus. Cirrus sat on an ax-hewn log across the flames from Miharu. A barn’s length away, the blue roan stallion snorted softly as he lifted his head from a bucket. Cirrus glanced up and nodded at Miharu, then returned his attention to the rock in front of him—where he was arranging thin pieces of dark chocolate on top of a half-dozen graham crackers. As soon as he had them lined up to his satisfaction, he lifted a thin stick from his right side, skewered two marshmallows, and poked them into the fire. Miharu was so fascinated by the virtual scenario that Titan fled her thoughts. “What are you doing?” she asked.
