Transition never feels like the right word. I was never female. I just didn't have the language growing up. It was never about moving from female to male - it was the process of dealing with a complicated, diagnosed medical condition involving years of counseling, doctors & living authentically.

Being trans in America - I pass well. For a long time, if you didn't pass, you risked being verbally or physically assaulted or worse. And so we learned to hide in plain site, to mask certain characteristics, despite any pain. It was the only way.

Being trans in America - I pass well. For a long time, if you didn't pass, you risked being verbally or physically assaulted or worse. And so we learned to hide in plain site, to mask certain characteristics, despite any pain. It was the only way.

Being trans in America - ever wonder about the scars lining my forearms? If I had access to the medical care I needed when I was a teenager, maybe those wouldn't be there. Gender dysphoria is real. It is traumatic and intense. I was lucky. Many teens take the self-harm farther.
