Donald Trump isn’t a “climate guy.” But he is a Republican, so we could have hoped he’d at least be a “let-states-lead-the-way guy.” Nope. Last year, New York and Vermont passed historic climate Superfund laws that make polluters pay for their damage to our communities. Similar laws have been proposed in at least four other states. But now, the Trump administration is suing New York and Vermont, trying to destroy these laws. If Trump has his way, communities will be more vulnerable to floods and wildfires, and fossil fuel companies will be off the hook. Donald Trump is out of touch with reality. And his anti-science, anti-state rights agenda means certain disaster for many communities threatened by the climate crisis. Donald Trump has shown us how little he cares about leaving our kids and grandkids a livable planet. The day he was inaugurated, one of the first things he did was pull America out of the Paris Climate Agreement (for the second time). Since then, he’s removed all mentions of “climate change” from U.S. government websites. He’s canceled federal funding for climate research and clean energy. He’s making America weaker in the face of a crisis that’s taking lives, destroying homes, and threatening our kids’ futures.
