Things are grim. I don’t even like opening my paper subscription (still have one) these days. I thought of a thing to do for a nice hit of dopamine: post a picture of my cats once a day (now more or less 5-6 times a week), for the next 4ish years.

Not just because it was my reply (duh), but because cats organize themselves matrilineally when possible. It makes perfect sense that the job of “mom” is so coveted that it’s become a shared arrangement. 😂

Ashley (ticked tabby) likes small spaces. Sometimes she’ll paw at our bed covers to ask to be let in. Then she hides under the covers, purring away, or as I like to call it, burbling. It’s basically fast and loud purring. Here’s a moment of Ashley’s burbling session. ❤️

“No kisses” Sunday
Nick, grey tabby, has been kinda mad. Mad that Angie gets the good toy pickle. Mad that we won’t let him in the basement. Mad that the cleaning lady didn’t understand he didn’t want pets. This is him letting me know he is “angy and don’t want kisses”. So I settled for air smooches while I took this pic.

Mother and Son Tuesday.
Ashley (ticked tabby) shows Nick (grey tabby) the ropes of complete relaxation. When I took that shot, I went “Aww, mama and baby!” “He’s not her baby, she’s not his actual mom”, my spouse quipped. Me: “How dare! She accepted him immediately when they first met, and she’s groomed him constantly, played with him, and all that! She even taught him the song of woe of their people. Adopted moms are just as real as other kinds of moms!”

Calm vest, Sunday edition.
My child noticed that Nick calms down from his usual frenzy mode if he puts a harness on him. “It’s like me with my weighed blanket!” quips kid. He might not be wrong. We’ve noticed that he’s become a lot more anxious and aggressive in general. Part of it was the endless construction noise from the basement. Part of it has been that I’m not home as much. Anyway, I guess it works.

Before there was a Nick, an Angie, an Ashley, and even a Gracie, there was Boris. Before there were human babies. Boris thought he was my baby. So, while he was never a lap cat (too anxious), he was amenable to being held in my arms, especially if I was already sitting on the couch. He would have loved nothing better than spending entire afternoons draped on my arm. ❤️

Nick the grey tabby pretends not to recognize me, because I have only been home a couple of hours a day the past few days. Me: “You still have three humans at home! I’m not away for fun! I’m keeping an eye on my elderly mom who broke her pelvic bone!!” I don’t think all will be forgiven unless and until I let myself be a human hammock for a few hours in the proximate future. 🤣

Nick the grey tabby, trying to fit in a ridiculously narrow open shoebox. One could have flattened the carton entirely, and he still would not have fit. But cats aren’t governed by logic. Apropos of (next to) nothing, it occurs that it took me far too long to realize that “ One does/could/would/etc” derives from the French construct “on” used as a neutral pronoun, as in “On va en enfer en suivant le chemin des bonnes intentions.”

Friday Cleaning edition.
A grey tabby sits on the tallest perch of a cat tree, licking parts clean. All our cats take turns on top of the cat tree. Nick just happens to do it much less than the other two. So when I spied him there I took a few pics. Only afterward did I realize why half the photos were blurry (vigorously cleaning the general area where the family jewels were formerly housed). 😂

A grey and white tabby sits on an adults’ legs. Angie is a crotch sitter. There, I said it. It’s her version of lap sitting, and out of our three cats I would have guessed the least cuddly. I was partially off by that: it’s a combination of competing for attention with Nick (last arrival), and just really, really loving the spouse. She’ll sit on my torso sometimes, but only if “food guy” isn’t immediately available. 🤣

Monorail Operation Bulletin Tuesday:

Not my cat Monday, Iceland Edition
An orange and white tabby is being petted while lying on top of a waste bin situated outside of a courtyard. I do jot know this kitty’s name. But he (guessing here) lives in Reykjavik, and was a busy cat. He frequented the bookshop/souvenir store two blocks from our VRBO apartment, the cafe a block further, and of course, his own courtyard, where we finally spotted him in chilling mode.

Surprise Wednesday
A ticked tabby sits in a laundry hamper. Ashley isn’t a jumper. So when I went to put some clothes in my hamper and spotted her in there I was shocked enough that I stopped talking while in the middle of a sentence (ask my family, they’ll tell you it doesn’t happen often). I later told my kids that my brain exploded from the cuteness, while brandishing this photo on my smartphone.
