Blog series: Contemporary U.S. Masculinity Now Open by fifth wheel press Contemporary U.S. masculinity is at the center of many raging debates. In 2023, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that "nine years after the first misogynist incel attack, male supremacy remains a legitimate and rising threat that warrants greater attention." Medical language is sometimes used to diagnose and prognose, as in the thinkpiece army regarding an "epidemic" of male loneliness. Data points also show a connection to violence that might rightly be considered pathological: most notably, that 98% of mass shootings are carried out by men, often young. One decade ago in 2015, the neo-nazi founder of The Daily Stormer, Andrew Anglin, described "the large number of young men he’d encountered on Men’s Rights message boards who were desperate for a male-focused ideology" as a key recruiting tool for explicitly fascist projects. Ten years later, it is clear the right's efforts have been successful, not least in the data that Trump improved his vote share with Gen Z males by 15 points over the 2020 election. This call for submissions seeks written work that pushes back against the "manosphere" of right wing masculinity. Work that probes the cracks of the facade; that identifies symptoms and causes of pathology; that offers notes towards possible masculinities; that renders abstract discourse in the particulars of lived experience; that subverts binaries in order to learn from the outliers; that begins a conversation with young men in the U.S. in order to offer an alternative to Andrew Tate, Andrew Anglin, and others. Please send 1-3 poems or hybrid works (no restrictions) or 1 prose piece (<1,500 words).
