Sigurd Lewerentz and Gunnar Asplund, this one’s for you — your brilliant collaboration, biblical architecture, and doomed (b)romance

Georgian Bath? How about Brutalist Bath!

Sign the petition to save the fabulous little Church of the Good Shepherd in Batheaston (1966-67) from demolition, and allow the local community to buy it instead.

My diary reminded me that it’s Carl Nyrén’s birthday today, so I guess here’s his official introduction to my repertoire? 🍰🎡

Venetian travels will resume shortly, but today is Anders Tengbom’s birthday! 🍰 To celebrate this green flag, you are hearing from my favourite details book in my library. Oddly contemporary, this:

There are obvious Venice buildings to post, but I’m starting in familiar territory with Sverre Fehn’s Nordic Pavilion (1958-62). Briefly I recalled Mies in Berlin, but Mies is vast and relentless. This is intimate, nobly poetic, yet ever so slightly aloof in its delicate light and shadows:

The only appropriate travel reading in Venice, I think:

While I am in Venice, can I offer you some ancient Palladio memes from my scribbles. Quattrocento architects were almost an expansion pack when I flirted with Old™️ buildings in Y1. This might come back

Going to Italy for a study trip is every architect’s canon event. It’s my turn. For the rest of this week I will finally be true to my header. Venice, a night promenade, doubly enjoyable after a delightful wine bar detour:

Swedish update: I tried the official Swedex practice exam today and passed C1 reading AND listening with flying colours… 32/35 on both and the bar is 25/35 (which I thought quite lenient?)

1.5 years of commitment paying off! Allowed to be proud of myself for this I think 😭
finished duolingo Swedish (yay?) and reached ‘apps can’t save me now’, folkuniversitetet I don’t feel very B1 but thank you for the affirmation… now onto ‘trying to practice with my single digit IRL Swedish friends who I see maybe four times a year’. If Ralph could do it I can do it!!

Started a map of where all my 20th-century (more or less) Swedish architects are buried. I present to you dead architects in Sweden 🗺️🪦: www.google.com/maps/d/u/2/e...

Please tell me it’s not super niche to like Bengt Lindroos…? 😔 He was my Halloween fancy dress prompt for this year, in which I made an incredibly low effort, some might even say *lazy*, attempt at recreating this photo from his Markelius office years:

1940s Blandaren interests me because there were SO many architects. Observe, the iconic photo L➡️R:

Rolf Engströmer, Per Olof Olsson, Bengt Lindroos (standing), Harald Thafvelin, Bertil Thafvelin (standing), Mats Molander (cigarette), Hans Asplund (standing), Claes Knutsson, Henning Orlando 🪿

I finally identified the last architect in the Blandaren 1943 photo, so I can now offer you yet another architect brother pair: Harald and Bertil Thafvelin, Blandaren alias Tavve and Ångbry 🪿

Moots and friends, your best Venice buildings and/or food recs please? Other than Scarpa and the island cemetery. Biennale first time goer tips also welcome (mostly there for the buildings). Thank you! 😘

Binging operas again to get through this deadline week, so a throwback to spring when I went to my first in-person opera in Malmö and saw La Bohème at the Lewerentz, Lallerstedt and Helldén opera house/ex-stadsteater (1944):

Basildon New Town is sadly not named after Basil Spence who worked on it (😞) but I think this is a myth worth starting
