2024 art summary, or: a year of Tallum 🌲

Sigurd Lewerentz and Gunnar Asplund, this one’s for you — your brilliant collaboration, biblical architecture, and doomed (b)romance

Happy Klas Anshelm day, instead of the heavy hitters I offer you the LTH fountain (with Arne Jones, 1969) that could be lovely if you don’t look too closely <3 ⛲️

Found old Markuskyrkan photos I never processed so you’re getting Lewerentz on your feed again. I miss him

Anders Tengbom is surely the least “looks like his IRL self” in my repertoire (👈 she says as if any of them do)

Another holy house in brick and mortar. Peter Celsing’s Härlanda Church (1958). What impressed first was not sight, but rather every other sense: the raw materiality, the absolute silence, and the soothing scent of burnt wax that permeated the room. I shall never forget this.

On Sundays we go to mass, and this time I am spending my Sunday morning at Peter Celsing’s other holy house of brick and mortar, S:t Tomas, Vällingby (1960):

First decade lore my beloved!! 🥳❤️ A few snaps from an adventure in Northants on a cold spring day. This little building that isn’t like a building at all and instead a 1:1 model of one, which is exactly how it should be:

4️⃣ The fourth entry on our 2025 Coming of Age list of the best British architecture now eligible for national listing is the tiny Photographer’s Hide in Northamptonshire, by Níall McLaughlin Architects. Their first complete building, it cost just £15,000.

Like Denys Lasdun, I play the piano very badly. I could not stop thinking about the music score I saw at Friluftstaden, so here is my clumsy interpretation of the Friluftstaden theme song(?). Part 1 (there are two melodies; working on the other one)! 🎹🏡

A very niche question, but does anyone know anything about this typeface? Was it created by a specific make of typewriter? It appears every so often in the archives and I've long thought it elegant.

Today I am thinking about Gunnar Asplund’s Skogskapellet (1918-20), and how there is a plaque that says “today me, tomorrow you”. Yes, dear Asplund, maybe we will all one day die, but all the same it doesn’t get any easier.

I just found out that Eva Eriksson, who wrote the latest big book on Asplund, has died. This is too much devastating news for a week, so here are a few snaps from the Asplund exhibition at Konstakademien last year in conjunction with the book release, which really should have been longer:
