I do understand: you want permission. There’s a machine in the corner wrapped in human skin that makes things out of shit and blood to look like whatever you want (as long as you don’t look too closely). You gave one to your teacher and they didn’t notice. Your boss told you to use it after they laid off half the team and it was fine. You fed one to your kids and they liked it. You want to know you can use it sometimes without me thinking less of you. You don’t need me to believe it’s useful, you just want me to be polite about it.

Theoretical interactions between Australium and active muscle tissue Observation of differing individuals and their exposure to Australium reveals a certain propensity for Australium’s energy giving properties to persist for longer in those with a more physically industrious disposition. A fellow researcher and colleague of mine, Radigan Conagher, is a sterling example of this. Radigan is a short man – scarcely taller than myself – of a broad, muscular build. This has been true since I first met him, but over the course of many years working together, his muscular figure has only become more pronounced. This is perplexing for a man approaching his eightieth year, as you should normally expect a decrease in muscle mass. While both of us have been exposed, it is primarily Radigan displaying these effects. Indeed, of either of us, my exposure is far higher, considering the implant we developed that disperses Australium through my blood at regular intervals. However, while I have since had a marked increase in vitality, I can hardly boast an athletic figure. Replenishment of muscular tissue is much more subtle, despite higher quantities of Australium in circulation. We have begun to theorise that a major component of maximising the efficiency of Australium usage depends on muscle stimulation: those who are more active have seen longer lasting effects, and it seems likely that Australium is more capable of binding to active muscle tissue, when it would otherwise be gradually filtered out of the blood stream. The effect is that it is absorbed more fully, and its energy allowed to persist within the cells. We have thus devised an experiment – which Radigan has graciously offered to be subject to, and myself to document – stimulating the muscles simultaneously with injections of Australium, in order to replicate this effect. Test 1 • singular intravenous injection of Australium • continuous muscle stimulation via mild electrical current Mild electrical stimulation received to the pectoral and bicep muscles, in conjunction with intravenous Australium solution. Swelling of the tissue was observed, within the first minute of commencing the experiment. Subject’s heart rate became elevated during the test, but returned to recorded resting rate once administrations were finished and expansion ceased. Upon palpation, it seems that the swelling was not caused by an increase in fluid to the effected areas, but an abrupt and rapid development of new muscular tissue. It is firm to the touch, and behaves much like you would expect it to. No signs of oedema. The additional mass was enough to see a small increase in weight. Radigan noted a slight aching, burning sensation, but that it wasn’t painful, nor unpleasant. Perhaps the opposite. He seems pleased with the results thus far. He also commented that he was hungrier after the fact. Nutritional supplementation will be taken into account in future tests. Test 2 • Australium solution administered over a longer period via intravenous drip • stimulation extended to the abdominal muscles and thighs • subject encouraged to eat intermittently Significant increase in muscle mass was observed, with both visible swelling and jump in comparative weight. Subject reported a heightened appetite in subsequent days, and appears to still be incrementally swelling– another slight increase in weight noted during the following week. Upon suggestion, subject has also integrated offal into his diet, to ensure he is meeting his nutritional requirements. He seems to have taken well to this. Interestingly, Radigan’s resting heart rate appears to have decreased. His heart sounds perfectly healthy, however, I suspect it is somewhat louder. I will make note to monitor it closely, but as there are no significant signs of stress, it isn’t an urgent concern. Test 3 • repeat of test 2, some time after the fact – again, with focus on biceps, pectorals, thighs and abdomen • subject offered a significant quantity of offal during the test A pattern is emerging, with weight, appetite and muscle mass on the rise, and resting heart rate slightly lowered again. Subject’s movements have become stiffer, as his limbs have thickened considerably, but this does not appear to trouble him. Subject’s heart is audibly louder, and has experienced mild swelling in his limbs that would indicate a rise in blood pressure. There is yet more evidence that changes in the muscular tissue have also extended to the internal viscera. Radigan demonstrates a powerful lung capacity not observed prior, indicating, perhaps, a strengthened diaphragm. A remarkable stomach capacity has also been observed. A sizeable trough of offal was prepared – not an optimal way of serving it, unfortunately, but such a large quantity of meat proved difficult to present more elegantly. This was only to be offered, there was no requirement nor expectation of the subject to consume all of it. Radigan initially used his hands to stuff meat into his mouth, but seemed to give up on that endeavour relatively quickly, instead opting to hunch over and devour the entrails, much in the way that livestock would. Astonishingly, he appeared to be able to swallow the organs whole, almost effortlessly sucked down into his muscular throat. Even more astonishing, upon draining the bloody residue, Radigan quenched his thirst with several litres of water. His enlarged stomach was distended to such extremes that even the thick layers of muscle building on his belly did little to contain it, stretching considerably. Long after the experiment finished, during digestion, his muscles continued to visibly swell in mass.

I wonder how feasible it’d be for prey to ruin the digestive process by drinking the fluids. Our stomachs have mechanisms for stymying excessive acid - it makes CO2 as a byproduct, so getting very gassy inside the pred would also be kinda fun.
