I seem to have a bunch of new followers so I figured I'd say hello! I'm Dan. I'm a Polaris ILS administrator, systems librarian, database admin, data analyst, podcaster, cyberpunk, and professional weirdo.

Sometimes I swear. I hope y'all are okay with that.
Damn it's only 11:45. Why is my battery so low?

~* checks running apps *~

Ah. That may have something to do with the 29 apps I have running right now. Fair enough.

All I wanna do is zoom-a-zoom-zoom-zoom

And set up a dev environment in a VM

Just shake your rump?

Did I write the code for this sproc?

Yes.

Have I used this sproc before?

Yes.

Have I added this sproc to multiple library databases without issue?

Yes.

Do I still check for bugs even though it's literally never changed since the first time I've put it into production?

Surprisingly, also yes.

See what I should do is, I should start posting something that looks like it's the results of one of those Wordle type games, where you can see the results but not the answers? But here's the thing, beloved, the game doesn't exist. #SowingDiscord

I use virtual desktops on every OS I use. On macOS, I literally built a workflow around virtual desktops. I assign specific apps to specific desktops.

I also do this in Linux

And Windows 11's virtual desktop system is so shite, I'm about to give up and say "Screw it, it all goes one damn screen."

Yes, wired connections are fast. But never underestimate the bandwidth of running a USB3 SSD up and down the stairs a couple of times.

I love me a good cover meme and wow...

There are a lot of covers featuring a lady in red running away from you. 📚

The nature of my back and spine is such that, some days, I cannot seem to stretch far enough to fully loosen things up. And it's days like that where I look at a medieval rack and think, ya know, I just might.

Password does not meet complexity requirements.

Okay then, let's try the formula for calculating the Schwarzschild radius of a black hole — in LaTeX. Oh is that *too* complicated for you? Well pick a side, dammit.

*whirrrrrrrrrrr....bweeeEEEEEE... whirrrrrrr* and it prints the page.

Time elapsed: 5 - 10 seconds depending on whether or not the printer needs to warm up.

In the US, during the 1980s, there were dozens of TV ads for music collections like Freedom Rock and Time Life album sets.

I wonder how many kids growing up at that time only know, like, 20 words to a given song because that's all they ever heard during the commercial?

Fun fact: Shepard Fairey created the original Mozilla dinosaur branding.

jwz is a former Mozillian who was literally there when the magic was written, and he wrote quite a bit of it himself. And he's dumping all of the original branding on his website.

The original Mozilla "Dinosaur" logo artwork
It has come to my attention that the artwork for the original mozilla.org "dinosaur" logo is not widely available online. So, here it is. As I explained in some detail in my 2016 article "They Live an...

Nerdy librarian stuff incoming.

A few weeks ago, I released a browser extension. And if you're not a systems librarian working with Polaris ILS and SimplyReports, it's absolutely useless.

But what if you work with Polaris and SimplyReports, but you're not a systems librarian?

Well...

Ya know... sometimes it's nice to pause just for a moment and remember that someone *made* technology. There are stories to be told and some of them are deeply human.

Like that one guy... who created TIFF.

Mr TIFF
For as long as I have published my books, one of my overarching goals was to give credit to those who actually invented the hardware and software that we use. It has taken 10,000+ hours to create tha...

This is an issue I've been dealing with professionally and I felt it might a little too "Inside Baseball" to talk about elsewhere but, ya know, when the 404 is covering the collapse of a major supplier of library materials? It's not just a professional issue anymore, it's fully public. 📚
