Peek-a-boo with an octopus and her eggs 🙈

MBARI researchers used ROVs to study pearl octopus (Muusoctopus robustus) mothers nesting near warm seafloor springs. Unlike other deep-sea octopuses, their eggs hatched in under two years. The extra warmth boosted metabolism of the moms and their broods.

This octopus is giving real "leaning on the door frame with your arm raised" energy.

A Coconut Octopus (Amphioctopus marginatus) sitting in an open clam shell. The shell is on its side, so one side is up vertically on the octopus's left, and the other side is behind the octopus. The octopus is facing forward. It has one arm up of the vertical left shell, so it sort of looks like a person raising their arm and leaning on a door frame. It has a fleshy "horn" above each eye, and its is a mist of brown and off white. The shell is white on the inside, light brown on the outside, and purple at the rim. There is an empty snail shell in the back and to the left. There is fine grey sediment on the seafloor.

It's truly amazing how a deep sea squid looks EXACTLY like a strawberry. Not just a vague resemblance, its got the right shape, colour and it even has the "seeds." They were even described by S. Stillman Berry!

What's more, we're the only ones that know that they resemble each other.

Dude has loooooong wings, I had to reduce its size a lot 💀 at least this time I wasn't defeated by venations (see below), so I also managed to put legs 🥳

In #invertober2025 Day 28 we caught a pearly green lacewing

It's time for your regular reminder that flamboyant cuttlefish eggs (Ascarosepion pfefferi) look like toy capsules.
A cluster of Flamboyant Cuttlefish eggs (Ascarosepion pfefferi) in a coconut shell. The eggs are transparent and almost spherical. They sort of look like clear balloons. Inside several of them you can see the baby cuttlefish inside, developing. They are mostly white. There is also a translucent blob in the egg that appears to be attached to the fetuses. Two more eggs are in the background, one of which has hatched. Several Flamboyant Cuttlefish eggs (Ascarosepion pfefferi). They are translucent spheres where you can easily see the baby cuttlefish inside. They resemble toy capsules. The cuttlefish have their iconic purple, magenta, yellow and white colouring. Six cuttlefish eggs are visible, with three being clearly visible and two half visible. One of the clearly visible eggs has a messed up exterior, so its hard to see inside. A Flamboyant Cuttlefish (Ascarosepion pfefferi) hatching from an egg. The egg is a bluish translucent sphere. It has some sort of hairy tendrils sticking out, but its unclear if that's part of the egg or some other organism. The cuttlefish is looks like a tiny adult Flamboyant Cuttlefish, with it being white, brown, yellow and magenta. It is squeezing out of the egg's membrane mantle first. It is pointing to the left, and we are seeing its bottom side. There are some other eggs in the background. The eggs and cuttlefish are being illuminated by a light, but it is otherwise dark around.
