Whenever someone from an “AI” company has a declaration for “the entire software engineering world”, bear in mind that their coding experience is probably rather limited. *They* may not realize that of course, but for sure - legit software engineers are very cautious about making big assumptions.

Once a year I like to reflect on my privilege, growing up. Can I pick out one simple thing that I had access to that was an incredible privilege? Last week I remembered that in high-school, we started with 1x oscilloscope per class, and by the time I left we had 1x oscilloscope per student.

Once a year, I re-assess why I work in the AAA video games space. It is still to push the medium in a such a way that the savvy audience question how it could have been achieved - To capture that audience’s imagination in a such a way that they question everything they know about games. #gamedev

Christmas #gamedev story. When I joined a new project in 2020, myself and a bunch of Snowdrop people swept through the game looking for obvious performance wins. One of the odd ones was collisions with trees and plants, which shouldn’t have been a challenge as we’d done games with those before.

Now that I’m non-dairy milk only, I’ve starting to notice a few places that don’t serve it. E.g. It’s absence in McDonalds is pretty odd. Like, am I supposed to carry around my own carton? I only need a little. Ok no? Well I guess I’m drinking black coffee then.

I’ve many args against the way gen AI is being positioned and marketed (I am OK with ML in general). My favorite is to ask where the process is when using these “tools”. All products (even art) come from process, and with that there are artifacts you can iterate on. Why do some clients not see that?

What is the point of Pinterest really? If I touch anything I set off a bunch of boobytraps that send bots after me. Not even high tech LLM bots. Cheap scripted ones. If you’re going talk me into something, try a bit harder than Elisa here.

My buddy at work has reverse engineered the prompt that gets Copilot to recommend changing the name of Perforce’s “Swarm” to “P4 Code Review.” Now, we aren’t saying that’s definitely what happened, but… No smoke without fire… 😝

Legit - I once opened a support ticket about the Error List reporting errors that didn’t exist in the output window, and the support engineer at MS advised me to ignore the Error List window entirely.
Visual Studio’s “Error List” is the cockroach of multiform application windows isn’t it? Does it help me? No. Do I want it? Also no. Can I kill it? Only briefly, and then it pops right back up again. I even rearranged my aggregated layout to not have it, and it found a way to reappear in a new slot.

The year is 2025. You’ve accidentally performed a “Replace All” with blank instead of a “Find All”. Due to a bug in the IDE there was no Undo step recorded. #horrorstory #gamedev

I’m calling it. “Casual Breakthrough” is the only true hardcore mode in BF6. Only your deaths count towards your stats, not your kills. Who are these pussies with a K/D above 1.0? Show me how well you play when your kills mean nothing. Only objectives matter!

For reasons that I suspect are stress related, every time I do a GDC talk I gain 20-22kg in the run up to it, then lose the weight afterwards.
At some point I hope to not look so fat when being recorded for posterity. It’s jarring. #gamedev
