Such a fun performance, but it's nice to see the corollary to chewing the scenery... I know it’s impossible, for a number of reasons, for RTD to have read my review of last weeks episode and to have made changes to this week’s to improve it. But it does feel like he’s done some solid course correcting. Things matter to us because they matter to the characters.

Okay, I may have a new cosplay to look out... Yeah, this feels like a waste. So many possibilities going into a finale, and we do fake reality. Where we don’t have the characters we like and care about, because they’re replaced by mind controlled versions we don’t like because they’re behaving in ways ordained by a bad guy. Who now apparently wants to make the world better, by taking us back to the past socially and fashion wise.

These two may have been the best part of a mixed episode... Right, let’s get the big things out of the way at the start. There were two big reveals in this episode, and I don’t have a lot to say about either of them. We’re in much the same position as we were after The Legend of Ruby Sunday, in that there’s been a lot set up here, but my reaction has to depend on what is done with these things.

A successful playwright who not only gets to write for Doctor Who but appear in it as well? Not jealous at all... This is one of those reviews that tough to write. Not for any reason elated to the episode, but just there comes a point where I start running out of synonyms for good. The writing was good, the performances are good, the direction was good, the lighting was good, the music was good… you see what I mean.

Every time I see his coat it makes me think he's wearing a really nice dressing gown. I needed that. After a few weeks of disappointment, I needed a good one. Thankfully, Lucky Day provided. It’s a shame that some of the strongest episodes of the new era have been the Doctor Light ones, but that’s always been true. Just a couple of weeks ago they were joking about how fan’s favourite episode is always Blink (Funnily enough, Heaven Sent came out top of the most recent Doctor Who Magazine poll, before that it was Day of the Doctor, Caves of Androzani and Genesis of the Daleks.

I can’t say it’s got the same problems as last week, so that’s good. This is a solid piece of storytelling done competently. It’s a fairly straightforward Doctor Who staple, albeit not one of my favourites, and it’s nice to see a new writer coming on board, but there’s a real sense of nothng new here. Band of space marines, one who doesn’t trust the Doctor, Mysterious deaths, spooky monster, rules that the monster follows, some likeable supporting characters.

Ah, Lux. Perhaps the most anticipated episode of the season. Between the 1950’s setting, and the image of the cartoon character coming out of the screen, I could tell this was another one that was going to be in my wheelhouse. And it was very enjoyable. I just feel that once again, we have an episode made up of lots of lovely moments that doesn’t cohere into a satisfying whole.

So, it’s been a few months since we’ve had some new televised Doctor Who to talk about. And now we’re back with The Robot Revolution, which has some heavy lifting to do. To my mind, on the whole, it succeeds, but I do have a few little niggles. Lets start with the good. Varada Sethu as Belinda Chandra is wonderful. She’s smart, effective, capable, and holds her own next to Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor.

Okay, I promise that one day I’ll get to a character that my parents will have heard of, but Lightning Lad is a good one for a couple of reasons. 1. He was a major character who was killed off in the Silver Age, and 2. his resurrection was swift, until it wasn’t… Okay, so who is Lightning Lad. First appearing in Adventure Comics #247 as part of the Legion of Super Heroes, who were originally supporting characters in the Superboy series, the Legion grew in popularity as it grew in membership.

Or was it Joy to the Worlds in the end. (Double checks). Okay, we’re sticking with singular. That was fun. It was nice to come into this one with no expectations. I’d seen some advance reviews prai…
