Hideous licensing agreement from Red Ogre Review, but what really jumps out at me is the moral rights waiver
Red Ogre (@ogre.red) gets rights to your work upon *submission*.

And those rights are ridiculous. They can change your work, not credit you, use your work for advertising, or put it in an anthology.

Don't submit to this one, folks.

Context: this speech is from SIR THOMAS MORE, a history written, as near as scholars can tell, in the early 1600s by 6 or 7 people including Dekker, Heywood, Chettle, Shakespeare, and Munday.

It was never performed, because Jacobean England was a police state and it was banned by the censor.
Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

Apropos of the rights licensing discussion that has blown up here over the past day, I'm re-upping my blog post on some of the ways writers act against their own interests when faced w/ a publishing offer. It's about publishing contracts, but it applies to TOS too writerbeware.blog/2020/05/29/e...
Evaluating Publishing Contracts: Six Ways You May Be Sabotaging Yourself - Writer Beware
(A version of this post was originally published in 2014.) Several years ago, a now-defunct literary magazine called The Toast gained notoriety by demanding that its writers surrender copyright. In th...

News from Poland. Apparently the Americans have started circulating form letters nominating Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize - all the nation in question has to do is sign it. The Speaker of the Sejm told them to fuck off and the US Ambassador has had a meltdown.

You have to be spectacularly arrogant to think the Pope needs your biblical interpretation.
After Pope Leo XIV urged legislators to make sure immigrants' "spiritual rights" are being respected, House Speaker Mike Johnson responded by giving him a Bible lesson.

This is only related in a sideways manner, but: the story of any small slice of humanity is the story of humanity, just boiled down and distilled. So:

In 2020, we had a lot of conversations about harassment at SF/F conventions, and Isaac Asimov came up several times.
the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women — and interactions with them — through the lens of sex

Don't enter this. You'll lose all rights to your story. Period.

Competitions like this need to be called out, so they learn their good reputation shouldn't be used to steal the bread from writers' mouths. And that we're not all clueless rubes waiting to be taken advantage of.
Venerable magazine Harper's Bazaar is running its short story contest again, with the winner receiving "the chance" of publication in the magazine. Just one catch: per the wording of the guidelines, _just by entering_ you transfer copyright ownership of your story to Harper's parent, Hearst. 1/3

If Jeff Bezos could afford to spend $75 million on the Melania movie & $500 million for a yacht to sail off to his $55 million wedding to give his wife a $5 million ring, please don't tell me he needed to fire one-third of the Washington Post staff.
