This #WildlifeWednesday, meet the North American river otter! 🦦 Excellent underwater vision, near-sighted on land — maybe borrow a monocle? A group is a bevy, romp, or lodge; in water, it’s a raft! 🌊

"Is this the Krusty Krab?"
"No, it's the purple sunstar!" 🌟

This sea star prowls the ocean floor of Hudson Bay, hunting clams, mussels, and other invertebrates.

It’s #WildlifeWednesday!

Meet the painted turtle — Manitoba’s sun-loving reptile with a dark shell edged in red and yellow. 🐢☀️ They bask on logs with friends and can survive winter under frozen ponds by breathing through their skin.

🐇 #WildlifeWednesday is hopping in with the snowshoe hare! These seasonal shape-shifters change from brown to white to blend in. Look for their big back feet and Y-shaped tracks — and if you spot one mid-shed? Lucky you.

With fiery fur and a white-tipped tail, red foxes live in forests, prairies—even city edges.
Fun fact: A group of foxes is called a skulk or leash!

🌾 Tall, tall grass. Blue, blue skies.

We walked through a tall grass prairie on a warm July weekend.
Once widespread, less than 1% remains — and Manitoba is one of its last strongholds.

🌊 #MarineMonday: Tundra swans nest in Hudson Bay’s coastal wetlands, right here in northern Manitoba! 🌾🦢 Each year, they raise their young by the sea—then fly thousands of kilometres to southern coasts. Arctic roots, ocean journeys. ✈️🌎

🌊✨ #MarineMonday: Meet the Red-throated Loon!

The smallest loon of them all breeds in northern Manitoba and can take off from land — no water runway needed! It spends most of the year at sea, only nesting in quiet Arctic ponds. 🚀🦆

🎶 Thank you, nest 🎶
Meet the Brown-headed Cowbird — a bird that makes no nest. 🙅🏻‍♀️🪺 They sneak eggs into other birds’ nests, sometimes tossing out a host egg. Their chicks hatch early, grow fast, and outcompete nestmates. Once fledged, they join flocks of their own kind.
