Could this be the easiest high-mountain walk in the Lake District? Skiddaw is the fourth highest peak in England, yet the route in our June issue starts from a high car park and follows clear paths and grassy tracks up a steady gradient right to the top.

Keep an eye out for these boxing bounders on your walks over the next month or so. Brown Hares are normally creatures of darkness, grazing by night or at dusk or dawn. But in early spring you can spot them in broad daylight, as they race and chase and turn on each other in fur-flying boxing bouts.

We were when walking along the Llangollen Canal, about to step onto the magnificent Pontcysyllte Aqueduct... only to meet a locked gate!
